Hastings College Case Study

Within the residence halls of Hastings, college hundreds of students use the same washing & drying machines in every dorm. Within the majority of each dorm, they consist of three washers and three dryers for every student within the dorm. I have noticed within the past five weeks that I have been on this campus that many current and former residents of the halls have been complaining about the washers and dryers. All of them have complained and said that they can never get their laundry done in a good amount of time; because the machines keep running for long periods of time. After experiencing this and even though it is really nice that we don't have to pay for laundry, I believe that there is a problem at Hastings College in that the current …show more content…
Sway for the college to ne able to afford them would be to have the student's tuition goes, up for one year by a couple hundred dollars or even lower amount to help pay for them. This price increase will not even be a considerable amount that could make a significant difference, for students not being able to afford Hastings College. Of course, many people will probably disagree on the grounds of raising the price of college for washing and drying machines. Along with that, many people may bring up the issue of who will get the new washers and dryers within their halls first. My feelings on both of these issues are mixed. I do support the idea of raising the price of tuition for new machines but, I agree with the students being angry about the price increase. In either way I don't believe that the amount increase will affect the students that much, I that they will not even notice the price increase. The argument that was brought up on who will get the machines first, should not be a problem because everybody should get the machines at the same time. The number of machines that will be given to each hall will be different. I believe that each hall should have the same amount of machines so every hall is equal. For example, Altman hall will get only get four new sets of machines for the …show more content…
That is a question that I have been pondering, many people that I have talked to on this issue if they feel it is a problem and majority of them say yes it is. But is my proposal of this idea a realistic? I just don't feel like that Hastings College will understand that this is a real issue that this college is having. In the recent past years, Hastings has updated some of the halls including bronc and Babcock halls. With this recent update, the college will bring up the point that these halls were just renovated and they don't need new machines. The ultimate question is what if the college decides not to raise the tuition or even the other people's idea of having the community help for us to be able to get new machines. There are something's that people can do to help the machines become better for everyone living in the dorms. First, if you leave your laundry make sure that you come back to take the laundry out in a decent amount of time. The second thing people can do is try not to do your laundry on the weekends, try to find time out during the week to do your laundry. Last thing that you can do help keep the machines empty, if you see some's laundry has been in there for a long period of time take it out so they don't keep running. All of these little things will make a big impact on the machines and the lives of people living in the

In the Revisionist History podcast "Food Fight", Malcolm Gladwell examines two colleges, Vassar and Bowdoin, to determine what is of greatest importance in higher education. Bowdoin College seems to believe food of high important, its dining hall being characterized by "Fresh rosemary and a personal touch", as Gladwell says. Vassar College, on the other hand, is more focused on helping poorer students to receive a decent education. Gladwell comes to the conclusion that Vassar College made the better "moral" decision in deciding to put so much effort into helping smart, low-income students attend college; he feels Bowdoin made an immoral and "absurd" decision to put better food and other luxuries above educating poorer students. I simply must agree with Gladwell in this respect.…

The cost of college is rising, everybody knows that. The cost is expected to rise with inflation and the inclusion of new technology, yet what people were not expecting were the cost to soar as high as they have. In the U.S. News article "Hiring Spree Fattens College Bureaucracy—And Tuition" by Belkin and Thurm, they mention that in 1975 the average student could work 24 hours a week to pay for college; in today's world, it works out to be closer to 32 hours a week. This is not news to my peers, we hear it all the time from our parents or grandparents; where they tell us stories of how they worked one summer job and went on road trips every month and still had enough money for college with out taking out large student loans.…

If one would go around and ask the constituents of College of Dupage about their biggest issue on campus some would complain about the cafeteria food chains, the educational policies but the one complaint you would hear the most would be parking. Every year there are about 28,000 students who enroll, meaning they all attend by either riding the bus or driving. Majority of them drive, considering the fact that they are also new drivers who enjoy their newfound freedom. Since that is the case most students can't find parking, therefore they look to other options such as taking the bus, carpooling, or even scheduling classes later on in the day. Most would say the best solution would be to build a bigger parking lot or parking garage, which is…

Projects like remodeling, expanding a building, or buying more technology and books. In Homeless on Campus, Eleanor J. Bader writes that Jenn Hecker, an organizing director of the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, blames rising housing costs for the problem and cites a 2003 survey that found the median wage needed to pay for a two-bedroom apartment in the United States to be $15.21, nearly three times the federal minimum (Bader 694). Colleges should instead be focusing on working on fixing money debt issues with students. This brings me to the first…

Being in college means not only that you need to pay your tuition cost, but it means you more than likely don’t live with your parents and have to pay the cost of a dorm, gas, books, a car, etc. The cost of living is quite expensive so it’s not a dramatization in statistics that most people over the age of 20 have thousands of dollars in debt before they even leave college. The College Board reports that the average cost of room and board in 2016–2017 ranged from $10,440 at four-year public schools to $11,890 at private schools. Furthermore, the average cost for books and supplies for the 2016–2017 school year was…
