These have proved to be both positive and negative in the most recent news surrounding this man, although one should wonder how and why there has been this change from a respected reputation only just recently. Weinstein, just one former partner of the Weinstein Company, has been established in the business since 1973 and until 2017 has enjoyed a deservingly praised career (THR Staff, 2017). With injustice and cruelty running rampant in the world, it is unsurprising that people become determined to make things better for tomorrow. Those aware of the moral greyness of their actions often quote the cliché saying that the ends justify the means. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as “wrong” with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. In the long run, they cause more conflict since they no longer force themselves to hold their principles to same standards as they hold others. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.…

Though Denzel Washington won an Oscar for Training Day in 2001, Sexton contends that this was merely an “awkward…cultural redress” for the lack of proper acknowledgement regarding his work in “respectable” black roles, such as Malcolm X (40). By rewarding a rather stereotypically fraught performance with the highest acting honor, the Academy sends a rather disturbing message regarding what they “deem accomplished black cinema” (45). Though Fuqua is a black director who “may call the shots,” the “financial underwriters…have the first and final word;” and unfortunately, “production…remains firmly a white monopoly” (48; 47). With Hollywood maintaining an overly “white-washed” executive head, we are rewarded with black representations that merely…

The role of a leader is an incredibly vital and often challenging job. With leadership comes the responsibility to set an example for followers, provide direction for the masses, and work with fellow leaders improve current situations. However, with the task of leadership also comes the unfortunate matter involving the misuse of power. Too often in history individuals have used said power to turn against those they were meant to protect. While there is a substantial time gap between the two, Benedict Arnold and Joseph McCarthy are two of these individuals.…

The Watergate scandal, ran by President Richard Nixon and his committee to re-elect him, was considered one of the greatest political scandals in our world today. The scandal consisted of performing illegal tasks behind everyone’s back and covering reasoning behind each of them by lying on a consistent basis. Most of the task, such as approving the Houston Plan (or Plumbers) and the U. S. bombing took place months before the day of election. Unfortunately, the members of the Plumbers were arrested, and had to go the court; this result in Nixon resigning his presidency.…

In this article titled “worst beef ever; Jay-Z vs Harry Belafonte” Harry Belafonte observed one of the resplendent misuse practice of this modern time by saying that we are endowed with many high profiles artists and dominant celebrities, but demonstrated less concern or have withdrawn their back on the responsibility of the societies. He critically accused the black celebrity pair that they have done nothing enough for the minorities in which I do have a concern about. In my own perspective as a world renowned entertainer and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte shouldn’t have made the option of making his remarks public in an obvious path. He knows a better way of making this known to everyone, not by specializing in Jay-Z and Beyoncé.…

Today's Politics and The Oscars Summary: David Sims Atlantic article title “How Will the Oscars Reflect This Moment in Hollywood?” published November 14th, 2017, is an analysis on the recent winners and possible contenders for current oscar winning/worthy movies. His explanation brings controversy surrounding the recent winner of “Best Picture”, which was Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins. He uses this as an example of effects that current politics have on the interpretation of good cinema, and how a film like Moonlight is an advocate for indie movies with smaller production and themes surrounding minorities. Another point is how the Oscars changed when it comes to classifying nominees, and how they are becoming less consistent.…

This year Netflix suprised its audience with an unusual acquisition of a documentary film from Sundance Film Festival. Part of the beauty of modern cinema lies within its ability to visually depict the culture and society of any given period of time; it can combine history or science with action and emotion to create an authentic ambience. Not all of these depictions, however, are accurate portrayals of the reality of the situations featured in the given film; in those cases, the work reflects a version of the truth altered by the filmmaker and accepted by the audience. In Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction, the use of hyperreal violence and racial stereotypes reflects upon the attitudes of modern American society. By the 1990’s, a number of filmmakers had taken to hyperreal violence for use as a critical cinematic device.…

The Entertainment Industry plays a huge role in our culture and society today. It is a tool that can be used to inform, voice opinions, and promote products using hidden advertising and product placement. The entertainment industry is very powerful and influential to its audiences. Beyonce Knowles sparked controversy with the release of her self-titled album as it features a song that focuses on feminism, “***Flawless”. The song includes a section of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk, “We Should All Be Feminists”, in which she talks about the differences in the social structure of a woman's and a man's life. While men are taught they can do or be anything, women must make choices in life “always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important”. Beyonce's mention of feminism throughout the album caused discussion around the issues of gender equality but unfortunately the topic is not treated as seriously as it used to be. While women have gained rights over the last century that has made them more equal to men, invisible restrains in both the workplace and in everyday life still limit women from reaching complete equality.…
