Harvest Valley Survival

Harvest Valley Survival is, as formerly stated, not THE ANSWER to rescuing our society from the rage of these children. (THEY ARE CHILDREN!) Our hope is that we can provide a safe and caring environment were emotionally disturbed/conduct disordered youth can learn how to deal with their anger impulses in less destructive manners. Helping an individual to de-escalate is a skill that cannot be cultivated from an afternoon in-service meeting or how-to manual. However, you’ve made it this far in the HARVEST VALLEY SURVIVAL GUIDE! You’ve been encouraged to ask yourself some introspective questions that should inform your work.
As you continue with the reading of Inscriptions on a Belt, you will continue to gain perspectives on how to continue

Approaching them before they blow out may defuse many nukes.
• Every child, every person, has a wish to be understood. Sometimes all the student needs is for one of us to listen.
• When you observe a student beginning to escalate, approach them and candidly. Invite them to take space: It seems like something’s bothering you. If you take space you can take care of yourself and still have a successful day. OK?”
• Avoid power struggles. Don’t draw a line in the sand. Be creative and be aware of your own countertransference reactions. Don’t keep heaping on points in a scenario such as this: Staff: “Okay, you didn’t earn that last point.” Student, “I don’t give a *&^$.” Staff: “That’s another point!” Puullleezzze, do not pile on!

In closing……….the most EFFECTIVE EMPLOYEE AT Harvest Valley School is the person who can learn as much from these students as they do from themselves. The relational program can do a lot for you in the search for your best self. It’s a perk found in a business that can be so draining and toxic at times. As mentioned at the beginning, this Survival Guide is not intended to offer all the answers you’ll ever need. It is not a substitute for asking difficult questions in team meetings and supervision. It does not take the place of Educational

Reason for Referral and Background Information: Chris is being referred because Federal and State Guidelines mandate that a three-year re-evaluation be completed to determine if the student still qualifies for services, and are the services needed. Chris was initially placed October 28, 2009 as a second grader. At the end of Chris’s first year of school, at Starside Elementary in Desoto the DeSoto SIT team recommended Chris for an initial evaluation. The primary concern was low academic performance and attention level. It was determined that Chris met the Kansas Eligibility Criteria for Learning Disabilities and that he needed special education services.…

After reading your post, it made recall when I was a paraprofessional working with all types of students. The most effective component of the job duty was to attend professional development opportunities that would help benefit my responsibilities of how to handle various types of behaviors and how to de-escalate a student in crisis mode. All the professional development opportunities that I attended were very helpful when working with students with problem behavioral disorders. Many times it was my duty to remove the student from the classroom to the hallway to not disturb further the classroom environment and allow for the student the opportunity to de-escalate to discuss later what had occurred and provide coping and reinforcement strategies…

Osiris educational (Sept, 21, 2012), recommends tactical ignoring as a corrective strategy in order to ensure that the focus remains on the primary misbehaviour and does not turn to any secondary issues. A couple of secondary issues may be: the teacher arguing with the student or the teacher responding with punishment to a student’s bad attitude or negative facial/sound gestures. It is a method that enables the teacher to remain in control and focus on students whilst ensuring that the student concerned remains calm, without creating any further disturbances [Video]. Mrs. Mangraviti was very good at tactical ignoring.…

Last Spring, I had a student who was in the final semester of his senior year and was oppositional and rude in class. He had come to us because he had failed out of his previous private school and we were his last option. Because he is very intelligent he loved to point out every mistake that I made in class. I would politely accept these corrections, but was annoyed by his negative attitude. When he refused to participated with classmates during an experiment, I asked him to stay after and speak with me.…

Mrs. Zuck asked me what would be a good way to eradicate this issue so that they will no longer cause classroom disruption. I suggested splitting up the group and placing them about as far away from each other as possible, and ensuring that the next group who occupies the front and center group is a quiet and docile group that could set an appropriate example for the rest for the class. Mrs. Zuck was pleased with my answer and excused herself to go and quiet down a student who was beginning to become unruly. When she returned she explained to me that she is only able to interject herself into the classroom setting and take over a situation like that because Mrs. Reid and herself have spent countless hours working together and have built a relationship of mutual…

When reflecting on how to behave or what action to take, remember the Golden Rule- “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Similarly, Hunter references the Law of Harvest saying, “You reap what you sow” (2012, p. 85). In other words, if you do something for me, I will do something for you, which exemplifies how a servant leader meets the needs of those he serves and in turn builds authority. Teachers want to be acknowledged, rewarded, and feel valued by their principal. Putting this principle into action will create a healthy learning environment and a faculty focused on fulfilling the school vision.…

If kids could start school later they wouldn't be falling asleep during class. If school were to be able to start later in the day the people that do sports could do them during the morning before school. When kids are sleepy during school they can sometimes get an additude with their teachers and get bad grades. When kids get bad grades from sleep loss in one class they slowly start to fail their other classes as well. Lots of times the students aren't the ones causing the problem, sometimes it can be the teachers.…

Looking at the scenario for this week I know the student has autism and is having outbursts that ranges from mild to moderate, from tantrums to crying or shutting down. To be able to de-escalate the situations of outburst, first I must learn about autism and what triggers a child to have outburst to help de-escalate the situation. Changing the environment for the student to prevent outburst is a good strategy to start with first. When child is having a tantrum, I must stay calm and talk with a calm and smoothing voice. Using more aggression can make the situation more hostile.…

Do not take the parents comments personal, they are upset and will say what they are feeling exactly at that time, and I think a very important one is do not be defensive. By being defensive you will come off rude, unwilling to help, and the parents will get even more hostile (Gestwicki, 422). I think is this case the teacher can give the parents other options for how the child can move on and what exactly needs to be done. If the teacher does not know the action that can be taken, tell the parents you will find out by the end of a specific dat. I think setting a date will make it even more real and the parents hopefully will see you are actually on their side and trying to help them.…

Classroom procedures are important for every grade level but especially in a kindergarten classroom. Teachers talk about them, teach them, model them and practice them. It is essential to establish routines and procedures involving classroom basics, working procedures, hallway procedures as well as lunch and cafeteria routines. There are a myriad of additional routines involving bathroom, recess, dismissal and bus behavior. I consider the following fifteen procedures/routines to be important in any classroom.…

This current generation is the most technologically influenced generation to date and the way these children receive information best has changed. A study by Iowa State University shows that 64 million kids between the ages of 2 and 17 play videogames (Reisinger ST.). In school, children no longer can relate to examples about farmer life or playing outside with their friends. With the changing times, teaching styles and teachers’ curriculums need to change as well.…

Verbal and non-verbal communication allows a teacher to effectively communicate with students, maintain classroom management, address appropriate behaviors and expectations, and provide and safe and respectful classroom environment. Verbal communication consists of what a teacher or student says out loud. This includes a teacher directly interacting with her students by verbalizing information through teacher-student communication. When the class is being loud or disruptive, the teacher can talk to the class as a whole to be quiet or redirect their attention. When it a specific student needs to be talked to, the teacher can have one-on-one communication with the student before, during, or after class.…
