Harvest Moon Festival Research Paper

The Harvest Moon Festival is an Asian holiday that celebrates the union of families and friends while observing the full moon and giving thanks for the harvest. The Asian American Student Association and the Vietnamese American Student Association observe this day and created a festival here, at Oklahoma State University. I enjoyed the festival, even though the festival did get a bit disorganized, you could still tell that the organizations and the audience all had a fun time regardless of the somewhat mediocre talent.
It was a kind of a chilly day. The clouds dressed the sky in a dull white color and the wind made you well aware of its existence. The festival was located in the middle of the International Mall. When my friend and I arrived,

Thinking this was a completely Asian festival it threw me off a little bit. One can argue that adding a little bit of American culture to an Asian Festival can make the festival more diverse, but why would you add a culture that already surrounds them? The point of the festival was to try to make Asian Americans feel as though they are connected to the culture they have and make it feel more like the home in the countries they or their ancestors are from. So, this doesn’t really help the stereotype of Americans being self-centered and a bit overbearing in the eyes of some who may are may not be from America.
On the other hand, later on in the festival, my friend became severely uncomfortable. There was a performance of Vietnamese rapping. I could see her get so embarrassed that she turned as red as a lucky red envelope from Lunar New Year. I was not quite sure what they were singing and rapping about at first, I only understood little bits and pieces. Since my friend spoke Vietnamese, I asked her to translate for me. After a little bit here eyes went wide and she laughed hysterically. She would not tell me what they were actually saying, but she told me it had something to do with taking off

With these chitchats, Chinese, the hardest, most baffling, language, became the most beautiful and connectable language for me next to Persian. While still in middle school I felt responsible to help my Persian family, friends and teachers with the everyday language barriers they encountered. My expanded knowledge of Chinese language gave me the confidence to adventure in places, unknown to foreigners, study Chinese Painting, travel for eight hours to Xinjiang prefecture to play as a background actress in the movie The Kite Runner, and encountered director Marc Forster and the shooting crew. However my seven years of stay in China was not filled with enjoyable experience alone as I often got to see many people spitting on the ground, dogs pooping everywhere, unsanitized street foods, kids with open crotch pants, cigarette butts that could be found everywhere, and bizarre foods, that made my head turn. But I knew just as how I interpret words in context, I have to interpret people's actions in the context of their culture.…

Rituals and Festivals in Europe: What’s the point?- DBQ Essay The anxiety and eagerness with which the people of traditional Europe awaited rituals and festivals leads to the interesting question of what their true purpose in society was. Rituals can be traced back to the early churches and their original practices, but evolved over time to become what are more known as holdings to bring people of all types together to support a common event. Writers, artists, and historians of the time recognized that these festivals had the potential to be seen as altering moments in European life spanning from the mid-fifteenth century as far as the late-nineteenth century.…

Subculture Research: Exploring the life of Hmong Americans In the past three years, I've been learning little by little about the south-east region of Asia overall. I've made close friendships, started enjoying the cuisine, visited China town in Chicago multiple times where a fairly large Hmong community resides and became a fan of anime movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki. A close friend of mine is a Hmong-American and she shares stories and facts about the lifestyle from time to time; a combination of the movies by Hayao show a glimpse of customs that are foreign to me. As a result, I’ve been curious about the different traditions and values in that particular region of Asia for a while now.…

I think immigrants should not try to integrate their culture into American culture because the U.S is a diverse country, within the U.S, one can find all sorts of cultures from Chinese to Latin. The U.S was founded on the believe that people have a freedom of culture and religion; they should not be forced to adopt the American culture because they, the immigrant, have his/her own unique culture. The American culture and another culture, such as Chinese, can definitely coexist, “My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food. Robert and his family waited patiently for platters to be passed to them.” The quote shows the Chinese family practicing their own culture,…

There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…
