Right after finishing law school Reid entered public service. Reid served as both Henderson City attorney, and a member of Nevada Assembly before winning the election for a lieutenant governor of Nevada in 1970. Reid’s father committed suicide in 1972. Reid held this post up until 1974 when he ran for a seat in the United States Senate. Reid lost to his republican opponent. One year later Reid also lost the race for the Las Vegas governorship. A change of luck in 1982 came as Reid ran as a democrat for a seat in the House of Representatives, and won. Four years later, in 1986, Reid successfully ran for a seat in the Senate. Reid held the position of Senate Democratic Whip from 1999-2005. Along with this, Reid also served as chairman of the Senate of Ethics Committee from 2001-2003. In 2005 Reid succeeded Tom Daschle as Senate minority leader, and there shortly after becoming the majority leader. Reid was unanimously re-elected for this position in 2008.
