In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter fulfills Joseph Campbell’s trail of the Hero’s Journey. All heroes have a journey they must undertake. Campbell illustrated that all stories and myths have similar layouts and stores structures. This journey is called “The Road of Trials”. Harry Potter follows Campbell's theories, primarily the Initiation: the Road of Trials. When the hero, Harry, has arrived in the new world, the wizarding world, he goes through a number of tests. These tests, supplied by his teachers, prepare Harry for the dangers ahead of him. In Goblet of Fire, Harry experiences far more forceful aspects of the magical world than formerly faced. In the first task, Harry must acquire a golden dragon egg (Rowling Goblet). Joseph Campbell defines the trials in multiple step, one being a “Dragon Battle”. This battle is against something completely unfamiliar and mysterious, a bigger force which the hero has no familiarity with. The Hungarian horn tail is a fearsome dragon whose front end, which can shoot fire up to 40 feet, is a dangerous as its back. It is covered in black scales, yellow eyes, bronze horns and equally colored spikes that jut from its tail. This dragon is known for being one of the fiercest dragons, and is known for being the most difficult dragon to overcome, in the Triwizard Tournament. Campbell notices through his studies that the hero will have a “brother battle”. This consists of a familiar foe who the hero has some affiliation with and a conflict between the two. As the Harry and Cedrick work towards the same goal the hero will have a moral battle with oneself. The hero’s dark side will peak through and he will have to subdue it to continue on his journey. Tied for first, Harry and Cedrick Diggory enter the maze at the same time. Both student are from Hogwarts, champions in the tournament, and equal with each other. In chapter 23 Harry and Cedrick are in a race for the cup when Harry must fight his dark side and save Cedrick from the vine threatening to ensnare him. They only way for Harry to continue on his quest is to overcome this inner darkness, save Cedrick, and head to the Cup
