The Role Of Harry Potter In Beowulf

Throughout every hero’s journey they are faced with many challenges, create alliances, and remain humble. In the epic Beowulf, defeats multiple monsters, gains many loyal followers, and stays modest through his journey. Even in the modern world our characteristics of a hero has changed since the Anglo-Saxon period, one concept still remains, defending the good from. Much like the Dragon in Beowulf, Harry Potter must come to a final battle with the one thing that represents evil and death, Voldemort, while Beowulf has Wiglaf, Harry finds his true friends, ones to stick with him through all his fame and obscurity, he befriends Hermione and Ron, true companions, lastly both heroes continued to show courage throughout their journeys. Harry Potter is courageous for facing on such an extreme battle at such a young age. “Harry, you wonderful boy, you brave, brave man.” (Rowling 707). Since Harry was so inexperienced as a wizard compared to Voldemort, and fought the Dark Lord so many times without all the Horcruxes being destroyed showed that he was a truly heroic, and was admirable by all. Like Harry Potter was courageous in his battles with Voldemort, Beowulf also faced the Dragon just as he had any other monster he had slayed. Even though this Dragon brought death to all he fought, and has never been defeated Beowulf would not be fearful. Instead he proved once again to be a courageous hero he was. “This bloody battle, stand when the fighting/ Is done. No one else could do/ What I mean to, here. No man but me/ Could hope to defeat this monster. No one/ Could try…” (Lines 747-751).
