As Muggles, we paint still images, but in the world of magic, those paintings come to life. In magic, instead of a portrait remaining still, a live-feed camera is installed at a particular place, and the subject …show more content…
For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by J. K. Rowling, as the students approach Gryffindor Tower for the first time, the Fat Lady in a portrait says “Password?” (Rowling 129).This shows that she is alert of those around the outside of her in the hallway to Gryffindor Tower, and is able to communicate with the students approaching it. In addition to students, those portrayed in paintings can travel between paintings. This happens because cameras may be set up close enough to each other, allowing people to appear in multiple different paintings. For Example, In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, by J. K. Rowling, the Fat Lady’s painting is attacked by Sirius Black. After the attack, she vanishes from her usual painting at the entrance of the Gryffindor common room. Percy Weasley asks Professor Dumbledore if they found the Fat Lady, and Dumbledore responds with “Hiding in a map of Argyllshire on the second floor” (Rowling 165). This shows that people in paintings can travel between cameras, thus showing up in different paintings.
In our Muggle world, the closest thing we have to the animated paintings is video chat, or FaceTime. Google.com states that a video chat is “a face-to-face conversation held over the Internet by means of webcams and dedicated software.” Though there is someone to talk to in the painting, they may be 500 or more years old. Magic has had access to video capabilities for many years before we
