Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a book of the series of Harry Potter. In this book, lots of characters become more vivid. In Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, Severus Snape is characterized as smart and contradictory in order to deepen people’s impression for Snape.

Professor Snape is one of main characters in this book. He works in the Hogwarts who has greasy black hair, a hooked nose and sallow skin.(Philosopher’s 94) Also, he is the Head of Slytherin house.(Philosopher’s 109) The hair of Professor Snape is greasy black hair almost all the time, so it can express he is a rigorous person and does everything in efficient. He minuses seventy points from Gryffindor because of Harry’s lateness and Muggle attire. (Half-Blood 153) However, when people will kill Harry he says that “ ‘No!’ roared Snape’s voice and the pain stopped as suddenly as it had started; Harry lay curled on the dark grass, clutching his wand and panting; somewhere above him Snape was shouting , ‘Have you forgotten our orders? Potter belongs to the Dark Lord- we are to leave him! Go! Go!’ ”( Half-Blood 563) Although, he does not like Harry and lets Harry embarrassed lots of time, but he still helps Harry in his way many times. He murders Professor Dumbledore, and many people hate him. Professor McGonagall says that “we all wondered…but he trusted…always…Snape…I can’t believe it…” (Half-Blood 574) He does not care about others’ thoughts and does things for his goal, so he becomes a contradictory person. The writer makes a mysterious profile for Professor Snape, so these contradictory emotions of Professor Snape let people make deepen impression in their minds. Therefore, reader will want to read the next book after reading this book.
