Harry Potter And Magic Impact On My Life

Decent Essays
The Harry Potter fandom is a large community with members from all over the world who come together, both online and in the real world to celebrate, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series and its film adaptations. Attempting to describe the impact Harry Potter has had on my life and what it means to me would be like doing a hand stand: possible and overwhelmingly simple for some people, but absolutely impossible for me. The books have filled my life with a wonder that has impacted me in a way that nothing else I experience ever will. Harry Potter and magic may not be real, but the magical effect it has had on me is.
This universe has become so ingrained in our culture that most people know the basic story. The number speak for themselves:

It is difficult to describe what it felt like to read these books for the first time. I truly had no idea of the magical journey that awaited me. Within the month, I finished all three that were published at the time. I was obsessed with everything Potter; however, it was not until the release of the fourth book, Goblet of Fire, that my participation and belonging to this community truly began. Before, I just discussed the series with my classmates but it seemed they were not as emotionally invested in them as I was. I treasured the fanfare and anticipation of each new release and the reading or watching parties for the films that followed. A great deal of my childhood was directly affected by this series: listening to the audiobooks with my little brother instead of playing video games, Halloween costumes, the posters in my room, my involvement in theater (even once as stage manager and continuity expert in my fifth grade abridged production of The Sorcerer’s Stone), how I learned and first used the internet, the influence on my love of reading. The list is endless. My 11th and 21st birthday parties were Harry Potter themed and coincided with the release of the first and final film releases. This Potter universe is so much more than just books or films to me. Everyone in school had something they were passionate about or good at, something they could escape to, like sports, dance, or playing an instrument. I had Harry Potter and that 's something that has continued throughout my life. Everything about the general frenzy, from the seemingly endless stream of media coverage to the hundreds of people lining up for midnight bookstore parties, came as a revelation and I wanted more. I found a second home in many online forums. I interacted with other people excited for an opportunity and a platform to talk

Joseph Campbell’s concept of the Hero’s Journey has made it into the plot of almost every story. From the call to adventure to the boon, a main character of a story often follows this traditional path on their journey of adventure. This proves to be no different for the renowned Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Letter after letter, the people of Hogwarts were desperately trying to get Harry to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.…

Harry Potter is the series’ hero and main protagonist, and he goes through the stages of the hero’s journey archetype. Harry lives in a normal world, and he goes to school just like any other kid that he knows. This is the foundation for the first step of the hero’s journey, the ordinary world. In the ordinary world, a character or hero generally sticks out from a crowd, because he or she differs in some way from those around him or her. It’s hard to believe today that Walt Disney was once fired because he “lacked imagination and had no ideas,” or that the Beatles were cut from a record level because the company didn’t think that they had a future in show business. (Weismen) Still harder to believe is that J.K. Rowling’s world famous book ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ was rejected by no less than 12 publishers before it was finally published in 1997 at the insistence of Bloomsbury chairman, Nigel Newton’s daughter Alice. (Vincent; Lawless “Nigel Newton”) The story of an 11 year old orphan thrust into an unfamiliar world of magic and set on a course to defeat the dark Lord Voldemort who killed his parents transformed into a 7 book series that has sold nearly 500 million…

In 1997, J. K. Rowling’s first of seven books in the Harry Potter series was released. The book quickly became a best-selling phenomenon and so did it’s successors as most young adult readers found themselves hooked and simply couldn’t get enough of Harry Potter. Although the series became highly popular, it also brought wide-spread controversy with some parents and teachers who were under the impression that the book promoted the occult, witchcraft, and evil. This perception led to attempts to ban the book series from many schools and libraries. Contrarily, the Harry Potter series should not be banned because it provides lessons on moral values, promotes a healthy mind, it facilitates creativity.…

Since the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was published in 1997, J.K. Rowling’s ‘Potterheads’ have done close-readings of the series. From determining detailed Hogwarts house characteristics to theories claiming Ron Weasley is actually Headmaster Dumbledore, the Potter fans have generated seemingly endless ideas and continue to find hidden meanings and symbols in the books. One particular trend in the series is the copious amount of biblical parallels. This is not just a reader-fabricated concept-it has been confirmed by Rowling that the books have strong Christian undertones, being a member of the Church of Scotland herself. In an interview Rowling said “There is a lot of Christian imagery in the books.…

My life has never revolved around writing, reading, but definitely not writing. To be honest, I’m not even sure when I learned to read and write, all I remember is the fact that I had the ability. In the first grade, I remember being in a church youth group where they wanted the high schoolers to do a play but wanted one younger kid to be in it. The age they had in mind was a kid who was in upper elementary or middle school, but my mom told them to let me try anyways. They decided to let me join the play, because they were impressed by how well I could read, I even helped the high schoolers memorize their lines and whispered them to them throughout the play.…

A Reconciled Love Just like most kids my story of how reading has impacted my life started when I was very young. A memory of my childhood was my parents laying my sister Ashley and I down every night to read us a bible story. I was always an adventurous kid, so for me story time was just another adventure. I have always enjoyed reading like my mom; however, I would prefer to be outside with a ball in my hand like my dad.…

Reading has always been a part of my life. Starting from a young child all the way up to where I am now I can remember many different ways reading has impacted my life. For some people reading is what they did to pass the time, but for me it has always been different. Being a small child I did not enjoy the outdoors in the same sense other children did. When I went outside I wanted to sit by a tree and read a book instead of run around and play on the playset.…

I enjoy reading because it’s something that takes my mind off everything going on around me, at home and in school. I’ll admit, I don’t read as much as I used to a few years ago, but I still find time to find a book to indulge in from time to time. One of the main reasons I don’t read as much as I used to is for the fact that I just have found more excitement in working on animations, drawing, games... But nevermind that, this paper isn’t about my hobbies. I mostly find horror and fantasy books interesting over all the other options I could pick from.…

As a beginning reader young adult books captivated me with what, at the time, were intriguing and comprehensible plot lines. Thus began my love affair with books. Eventually, those plot lines became my adversary, when their simplicity triggered a soporific rendition of the book. It persisted until the gifts of classical literature unwrapped as I learned to penetrate, explore, and discover meanings in, for example, Dickens’ lengthy description of a clock tower did I truly find my beloved. Although young adult books had their place in my life by inspiring a love for reading, classical literature has opened up a whole new perspective, teaching me to seek out knowledge while still yielding enjoyment as I consume each book.…

Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…
