Founded in 2005 the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) has made it their mission to make global activism more accessible through the power of story. (Anonymous, ND). They do this by creating campaigns to fight various forms of injustice and relating them to popular culture icons including Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and others. By making activism more accessible and more relatable to the younger generations of the public, they are more likely to increase the number of people who get involved, and increase the likelihood of success.
The Harry Potter Alliance has had several successes in their fight for justice over the past decade. Harry Potter-branded chocolate was being made by workers who were forced to work in slave labour conditions. This business practice violates several clauses of article 7 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. (Nations, ND) To fight against this the Harry Potter Alliance teamed up with Free2Work to convince Warner Bros. Studios that this practice was unethical and that they should make every effort to ensure that their branded chocolate was being obtained from certified fair trade sources. After multiple years of hard work, much resistance from Warner Bros., and the support of millions of fans worldwide, Warner Bros. Studio announced on 22nd December 2014, that all Harry Potter branded chocolate would be fair trade sourced, effective Dec 2015 and sooner where
