As a child, Harry was very eager about making friends, though he was uneasy around girls. He mostly spent his time on reading and music which he had great interest in. He read every book in the Independence Public Library, and as a musician, he played the piano.

One of Harry’s first encounters with politics was around the time he was paying back debts due to a failed hat shop business. Thomas Pendergast, a Democratic boss, approached and spoke with Harry to appoint him as a supervisor overseas. Thomas knew Harry through his nephew James, who had served with Harry during his time in the military. After becoming a supervisor, Harry ran for county judge in Jackson County. He was rejected at first, but then was accepted the second time he ran.
In 1934, Harry was elected as Senator. He served in the Senate Appropriations Committee which was responsible for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal projects. Harry ran again for Senator in 1940.
Franklin D. Roosevelt had to choose a running partner during the presidential election of 1994. Since Harry was very well liked due to his honest nature and drive for citizen rights, Roosevelt selected him. Harry only served as vice president for 82 days and soon had to take over the role of president on April 12, 1945 after Roosevelt
