Houdini was born in Budapest, Hungary on March, 24, 1874. He grew up in the U.S. in Appleton, Wisconsin then moved to New York City. His magic acts started in a circus when he was about 8-10 years old. Once, he started magic on his own with his brother he then changed his name to Harry Houdini. His mom died in 1913 while Houdini was on a trip to somewhere to perform.

Garfield's assassin. In Rochester, New York, in 1907, Houdini performed his first manacled bridge jump. In 1908, he performed the famous oversize milk can escape, in which he was shackled and then lowered into a large milk can full of liquid.
Houdini became interested in airplanes in 1909, and the next year he piloted the first successful flight in Australia. In 1912, he performed his remarkable underwater box escape in New York's East River. He also debuted his most famous act, the legendary Chinese water torture cell, at Berlin's Circus Busch. In this escape, Houdini was suspended upside-down into a glass and steel tank filled with water, with a restraint holding his ankles.
After being rejected for military service in World War I (1914-1919) because of age, forty-three-year-old Houdini found other ways to be patriotic. He gave benefit performances in military training camps and organized events to sell Liberty Bonds. His patriotic show, Cheer Up, featured a vanishing elephant trick.
Houdini also had a film career from 1918 to 1922. The serial in which he appeared, The Master Mystery (1920), was popular with audiences. He also campaigned against false spiritualists or mediums and wrote two exposed, Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits
