A communist does not follow any religion, which makes them an atheist. An atheist means one who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or Gods. Communist ideology heavily relies on hatred and intolerance of religion.
From his childhood, Hopkins inherited his mother’s belief, and regularly went to church. His first wife also clarifies that while he attended Grinnell College, Hopkins would often go to church. As time progressed his religious standards decreased, but that does not mean that he gave up his faith in God. Even until this day, there is an ongoing conflict between religion and communism. Working at the Christodora House also ties to religion, because it was highly motivated by religion. The settlement house that he was in tried to create what can be called a “Social Christian Order”.
