Identify the lead with which Bruce opens his essay and explains its effectiveness. Harry bruce begins his essay with a comparison between labour day and a “sniff of the woods or a glimpse of the sea”. This comparison using a simile is made between two opposite extremes implying that labour day was the last glimpse of something good before being locked away. This gets a story, or in this case, the essay going and helps you imagine the true meaning of labour day in the eyes of bruce, the writer.

Saying that the society wanted the institutions to be unpleasant is something he might have exaggerated. No school wants to torture their students and want the best for them. Suggesting that this was the case was a manner of thought that was going through his mind as he extremely loathed labour day. This however could be different from student to student as some people see school as an escape from other issues such as problems at home. He used generalization here by suggesting all students detest school, which is not the case. Suggesting that end of summer is the end of stories and friends and loved ones is something that he uses in order try and explain that nothing ever stays the same. This can be seen either way as one might argue if they love you enough they will always stick around. Even though he suggests that time never stops and sees this as a negative, he could turn this into a positive in anticipation for the years to come and the hundreds of new memories to be made. Again, the chain of thought by which he has approached this essay would vary among different people.
