Relationship maintenance between Harry and Sally is important because the coincidental encounters over the years flourished into an amazing relationship and as a result, they fell in love. There were harmful and helpful forms of maintenance that led Harry and Sally to recognize their feelings for each other.
Harry and Sally initially met on a road trip from Chicago to New York. There was no indication of a relationship forming. This is where an important conversation about men and women being able to maintain a platonic relationship without involving sex took place between them. Harry was adamant that opposite sexes could not have simple friendships without becoming sexual and Sally disagreed. This first impression was not becoming for Harry

Five more years went by and another chance encounter at a bookstore found Harry and
Sally once again in each other’s presence. The passage in time made Sally a little less pretentious

2 about Harry and she decided to go for coffee with him. Over coffee, they discussed the trials and tribulations that they experienced in their personal relationships over the years and they both were now single. To Sally, it seemed that Harry had changed his position on platonic relationships and following the conversation at the coffee shop, they began building a friendship.
They went shopping together, had dinners and long phone conversations on various things, such as movies they enjoyed and feelings they were having. They cried together and laughed together and during this time they became great friends. Together they decided to introduce the other to each of their best friends, Marie and Jess, hoping to find a compatible match for one another.
Marie and Jess ended up being attracted to each other, which left Harry and Sally, once again as single friends.
More time went on and their friendship continued to blossom as they became closer than
