The constitution states that all men are created equal, and that there are certain rights that cannot be taken away such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also, if there was anything or any law standing in the way of a person’s life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness we the people have the right to abolish such things. Well in Harrison Bergeron all men were not created equal to a certain extent, but they were made equal. George has a fixed mindset- a mindset according to which a person's basic abilities, intelligence and talents are just fixed traits that cannot be changed. This mindset makes a person's goal not to become smart, but to appear smart - something that can often prevent important skill development and growth, which could hinder one's actual potential to succeeding in life. He desires to be respected- something that he himself had admitted, and the combination of this fixed mindset of his and his want to be respected make George lie in order to impress the people around him.…

The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s use of hyperboles, symbolism, and similes develop the theme that forcing people into equality could be abortive. Essentially, hyperboles help develop the theme in Harrison Bergeron for several reasons. In the text it states “Ordinarily, there was a certain symmetry, a military neatness to the handicaps issued to strong people, but Harrison looked like a walking junkyard. ”This quote helps support the reoccurring theme of bad equality because Harrison looks very atrocious in his handicaps, while most don’t look that lousy. The story takes place in the future, in which all individuals are equal. Equal by intelligence, physical appearance, basically anything that would make one person different from the other. To insure equality the more intelligent people were forced to wear devices around their necks to hinder their thinking, and attractive people had to wear a sort of mask on their face. I would imagine the government did this in order to eliminate unnecessary conflict between people, and emotions in this “perfect society”. In the beginning we are introduced to George and Hazel Bergeron who have recently had there teenage son Harrison taken away.…
