How would you feel if you had no choice how to live? No choice on who to love? In Anthem & “Harrison Bergeron”, the society's were both based on, Equality. Although, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut & Anthem by Ayn Rand are both pieces of dystopian literatures, their portrayal of technology and love, differs greatly.
Technology is a thing of the past, present, and as well as the future. It changes everyday. In “Harrison Bergeron”, it's the year 2081, technology has really advanced. “Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking advantage of their brains”( Vonnegut 1). You can love whoever & what you want. In Anthem , Equality has met a girl, “ The Golden One”, who he falls in love with. In their society you are not able to love or like anyone. “For men are forbidden to take notice of women & women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whomes name is Liberty 5-3000, & we think of no other”( Rand 38). You must not like, love, nor touch any women or men. You are not able to choose who you have a family with. The government send you to the “Home of Mating”. In “ Harrison Bergeron”, Hazel and George Bergeron have a good relationship. “ Go on and rest your bag” she said. “ I don't care if your not equal with me for a little while”( Vonnegut 2). This shows that Hazel wants him to be well rested & she cares for his health. In this society you can't take off your handicaps, no matter the reason. Hazel is willing to break the rules for her husband to be comfortable. “We accept the love we think we deserve” - Stephen Chbosky
