She was born into slavery and escaped in 1849 to the North. Harriet strongly disagreed with the ways of slavery. She was mainly known for conducting the underground railroad to help slaves escape to the North. She lived in Maryland which was a Union state and did not approve slavery. Tubman would do anything to keep people save and she would risk her own freedom and life to do it to. This shows that America was not the “land of the free” because if people had to escape underground from people are they truly free? Many times she would use bizarre yet effective methods in the Underground railroad to preserve the secret. No white southerners knew about the railroad which made it so effective, and if followers with loaded guns came she would threaten them to keep quiet.
