Slavery is a legal or economic system in which property laws are applied to humans allowing them to be seen as property to be owned, sold, and they cannot withdraw from the agreement. This system of human property lasted for over 200 years. The era was filled with pain, fear, restriction, and racism. Talk of running away was commonly spread throughout the slaves, but it was deemed forbidden and impossible. Many who tried to run away were returned beaten and starved, this made most slaves feel as if they could never be free. Not to mention the slave owners believed African-Americans were born to be slaves and they had no purpose besides eternal labor. A woman named Harriet Tubman changed that for good.
