Harriet Tubman, a slave during the American Civil War herself, helped save the lives of thousands of others just like her. She was a brave, loyal and selfless leader. Those are all characteristics of a hero. Using the underground railway, Harriet Tubman helped a lot of slaves escape hard and severe conditions. The underground railway was a system that helped slaves get out of the harsh and deadly conditions that they had to face at all times of the day. Tubman made 19 deadly trips to help slaves reach freedom. The slaves had to leave all their belonging, travel at night and hide in the morning. They had to travel through many forests and unmaintained areas.

Overseers were owners who were at the farms to make sure that the slaves did their work properly and did not take a break or slow down. She was able to physically do all the jobs that grown men did outside on the farm. When she was a teenager, she was hit in the head by an overseer. The hit caused her to fall asleep a few times a day, for the rest of her life. Imagine if you just fell asleep a few times a day? Some people might not mind some extra sleeping time, but overall it would make life a lot harder. Despite having this hard condition, she still made 19 dangerous trips to help people.
