In the Facing Challenges unit, there are many types of characters that have to face many different kinds of problems. From either mental challenges to physical challenges these characters have to find ways to overcome their problems. Bottom line is things can get tough and you have to find ways to grasp these challenges and overcome them. It’s obvious, the clearest theme in facing challenges is, if you work hard, you can overcome any challenge in life. In Harriet Tubman: Guide to Freedom, the main character (Harriet Tubman) works hard to overcome her challenges life throws her way. One example of Harriet overcoming a great challenge are the trips she partakes on. Harriet Tubman travels more than 1,500 miles on each trip she goes on just to bring slaves to Canada. She walks through cold winter nights, without food, just to keep people safe. Harriet Tubman tackles her problem head on and overcomes a great challenge.
Another story from the Facing Challenges unit is John Henry and The Railroad. In this ballad, John Henry gets a new job building railroad tracks. When a big machine comes along and steals John Henry’s job, he has to prove he is better than the machine. He sets up a race with the machine in track building and states he will win. In this story the main character (Maya) has gone through a personal crisis and refuses to talk to anybody has her way of coping through it. It eventually gets to a point where a character named Mrs. Flowers starts helping Maya. She reads to Maya and becomes one of her really good friends. Mrs. Flowers soon helps Maya overcome her hardship and challenge she was facing. Mrs Flowers also has to overcome something in the story. The story is taken place in a time of segregation and Mrs. Flowers is being affected by that. She has to find ways of overcoming and passing that and soon gets through
