Harriet Tubman was a leading abolitionist in the mid-1800s and worked tirelessly to free those trapped in slavery. Harriet was born into slavery in Maryland in 1820, and successfully escaped in 1849. She risked both her life and freedom and returned to the South many times to rescue family members and other slaves from the plantation system. Harriet led hundreds of slaves to freedom in the North as the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad. She undertook 19 covert missions and freed nearly 100 slaves, including her sibling and parents. Over her 10 years as a conductor, she never lost a single passenger.
