The article by David Thomasma explain why the truth is important and how important it is to tell the truth to patients. Telling the truth is important because it the right thing to do. “It is a right, a utility, and a kindness.” In contrast, paternalism is a decision that health care professionals have over the patient’s decision. “Others must step in and rescue us if we are incapable of doing it ourselves.”…

The Ways I Lie Many people lie in subtle ways to try and soften facts or get away with something. People can get hurt or protected from pain in lies that get told to them. Or other times lies can cause them to think that a different outcome in a situation could have happened if that lie was never told.…

To this I reply there are instances in which one lies to protect their spouse (breaks the promise of always being honest), it is non-recurring and in the long run does not harm their partner, but rather protects them from the emotional damage of today. Let’s take for instance, the case of one’s spouse asking them if the food they’ve made is delightful or not, of course the partner will claim it is delightful even if in reality it is not. This can then be applied to a one-night stand, it is mutually made clear that it will not recur, and this experience has little to no emotional exposure. In this instance they would be breaking a promise (of always being honest), but would do more damage if they did tell the truth. Although one is breaking a promise, they would inflict more harm to their marriage if they did keep this…

“Lying” How would you know whether lying is okay or not okay? There are many terms of lying for example, lies to protect others, lies in the interest of that liar, and lies to cause harm. Even Americans conflict about lying that means they're confused about lying or not. Like Blanton’s opinion is just too simple to tell the truth.…

I argue that lying is permissible in situations where lying is used for the greater good of others, which is supported by John Stewart Mill’s conception of Utilitarianism. According to Kant in the “Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals” it is not permissible to lie because he defines morality as not harming others, which lying does according to his “Metaphysics of Ethics.” Conversely, Utilitarianism is the theory that right actions maximize happiness, which could mean this happiness is acquired at another’s expense. At the core of this theory is the Greatest Happiness Principle. This principle states that one should act such that one’s actions produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number.…

Is it ok to lie in any situation, or is it just wrong to lie at all ? In four articles that I read, it states a couple of things, for example, they talk about lying and if it's bad, is lying sometimes good, and is lying good. I believe lying is only good sometimes and it should only be used in white lies. I think a good time to lie is when you protect someone. One scenario of this is the story of Ann Frank.this is a good example because they were protecting Ann and her family by saying that there was nothing upstairs.…

Lying… Is it okay to lie and if so, when should I lie? Many people think that it is sometimes okay to lie in certain situations such as protecting someone's feeling or possibly, savings someone's endangered life. Although others may argue that lying is never okay because you may lose your trust with someone close to you, which is completely possible and even though we all may be conflicted on the topic of lying there are positives and negatives to both sides of the spectrum. Most of us can agree that lying to protect someone's feelings is one of the most common reasons to lie to another.…

Lying is never ethically okay, yet it is done on a daily basis and is therefore more widely accepted by various people. Generally, lying should be avoided, but there are many situations where it is justified. Instinctive lies, or lies that you automatically tell on the spot are usually ok because it is part of human nature to instinctively lie to protect ourselves. However, planned lies, like stories that you make up on the go or false ideas that you think of before expressing them should never be allowed. For example, if someone were to ask you if you ate the last piece of cake, depending on their tone of voice, for many, their first instinct would be to say, “No!,” without even thinking.…

For example, if there is a person who does not like conflict, he or she may tell a lie to fix the problem (Ford 98-99). People will also lie to other people by leaving out less desirable information that might hurt the other person emotionally. Lisa Firestone wrote “Even lies told in the name of protecting others can leave you feeling pretty bad about yourself, because you don’t feel like an authentic, strong individual when you aren’t being honest” (Firestone). The most common reason that lies by omission are told is to prevent unpleasant situations from occurring, even if it causes one to feel guilty (Firestone). People who have a big heart or cannot stand the thought of hurting someone or embarrassing them typically will lie to the other person by leaving out the more displeasing details.…
