Harn Museum Visit

On April 1, 2017, I visited the Harn Museum located at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. This was my first time visiting the Harn Museum. I was impressed at how big it was and how many different rooms there were. I spent about 2 hours there looking at the art pieces and reading the plaques associated with them. It was very informative about the artists and gave some background on them. One of the first areas I walked through there was an artist named Yvonne Jacquette, who was born in America. She did a lot of aerial prints and paintings. She especially liked to paint New York City. It was interesting to see a painting of New York City at night from an aerial view and see all the vehicles on the street

I saw many different pictures, prints, and ceramics. One showcase that was very interesting to me was set up like a timeline. It showcased mini ceramic pieces that were produced in many different countries. It showed transformations of clay from 3000 BCE to 2012. You could see the transition through time from being functional items for everyday life such as vases, plates, and bowls, to being more sculptural works of art. The more modern sculptural works of art included sculptures of a soda can, a cube, and more modern, containers glazed with color. A very unexpected exhibit was of metal cricket cages. These cages were from China and Japan. They were cages for crickets so they could go with an owner during his or her travels. This is a very different concept to our current culture, as they are viewed as pests. There were also mini prints, and religious sculptures. One very interesting and inspiring display was a rock garden. This was located outside and had large rocks set around along with some trees. Instead of grass on the ground, there was small limestone rocks raked in different circular directions. It was very interesting, but more interesting was the written explanation of it. It was designed by a landscape architectural firm. This rock garden was designed by a 21-year-old who was from the Philippines. He was diagnosed with cancer while working in Florida and designed this rock garden

The Hirshhorn Museum: Rings of Adventure The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has always generated conversation about its choices. Even after it had just been constructed, its architectural choices were the subject of critique. Two days after the museum opened in 1974, Ada Louise Huxtable, of The New York Times, gave the following review: “[The building] is known around Washington as the bunker or gas tank, lacking only gun emplacements or an Exxon sign… It totally lacks the essential factors of esthetic strength and provocative vitality that make genuine ‘brutalism’ a positive and rewarding style.…

Another display they had that really caught my attention was a display of ageism. The one quote from that display said, “Because people see an older person when they looked at him, they didn’t see someone who could do things; they saw someone who couldn’t do things.” There were also several other pictures and quotes like that one for that display as…

The piece that I would rate as my overall favorite was located on the back wall of the exhibit hall. It was very large, so that it covered most of the wall. It was a charcoal sketch on tan paper. Throughout this sketch, there were white highlighted markings, which added to the contrast of the dark, black velvet appearance of the charcoal. The work depicted a woman in Victorian-Era attire.…

Inca’s structure, and tools The Inca’s tools and buildings were mainly made of stone, and a little bit of wood in their buildings, but what is fascinating about them is how they built their houses. Stone tools were important to their life because wood tools couldn’t break stone, and their structures were made of stone (limestone or/and granite). Since the stone buildings were important( Machu Picchu or the city on the Andes mountains were also important), to the Incas way of life so it would be the top left corner in the exhibit. The way the Incas built the building is important to because that is what made them stand and stay standing for so long without collapsing. The way they made it stand for so long without being annihilate, and why…

The Tahoe: A Visual Experience at the Nevada Museums of Art, celebrates and showcases two centuries of cultural and creative production of art and art history of Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and surrounding Sierras. This exhibition is for the first time focusing on our local region instead of in conjunction with other national areas like Yosemite’s, Yellow Stone or the Grand Canyon. The goal of the exhibition is to allow future generations to celebrate and examine these areas, and their contribution to the broader culture. A surprising number of over 400 artists contributed to the Visual experience of Tahoe, in a span of over 200 years.…

This was definitely the most simple of the displays put here because all of the paintings were lifelike and easy to decipher because they were also more straightforward and seldom open to interpretation unlike the photos in Concentrations 60. Overall, visiting the Dallas Museum of Art was a new and exciting experience because its exhibits really opens one’s eyes as to how art alone reflects different periods of time, cultures, and places around the world and evolves as does humanity. Moreover, it shows how art does not come from culture, but creates it and often evinces the psyche of its…

Each group did a different lesson and informed the class about different subjects. Each group also gave great examples of different lessons we can use one day in the classroom to incorporate multicultural education into each students daily lives. The first presentation I really enjoyed and learned from was Paige, Jenna, and Lexi’s presentation. They did a presentation targeted to a 5th grade class.…

Although there was not a theme for each exhibition the relation between art pieces was present. It seemed that pieces similar to one another were put next to each other. I belive this was to compliment one another and bring attention to the art that was not as similar. Establishing a relationship between each item displayed is important because the complementary of the items enhances the viewer’s experience and adds importance to the theme (if presents) of the exhibition. Another important strategy to enhance the theme of the exhibition is item placement.…

For instance, an exhibit might have the theme of describing a specific natural gem that grows in nature, possible amethyst. The text may describe how it is formed, what properties it holds, and what it looks like. However, a description can only go so far, and subject such as this, especially for a younger age group of visitors, may have a hard time visualizing this beautiful unique gem.…
