Throughout elementary school, high school and college, students are preached to constantly about the harmful effects of marijuana, cocaine, meth, and alcohol, but throughout my years of education, I have never once been spoken too about the negative effects of steroid use and abuse. Anabolic steroids are one of the most misconceived and misunderstood drugs in human history. Anabolic steroids are extremely dangerous for young men and women to use. They also create an unfair playing field for those athletes who want to compete but don’t want to risk their future health by taking performance enhancing drugs (doping). Chances of accumulating heart disease are increased dramatically with the long-term abuse of steroids. Liver toxicity in relation to steroid use is caused when ingesting steroids. This is because the full dosage of testosterone must be passed through the liver before continuing circulation. Liver tumors in connection to steroid use are very uncommon and only appear when the dose of steroids is 400-600 times the clinically prescribed dose. Each of us can also take the time to learn the side effects and signs of steroid use so that we can identify it in young athletes and speak to them accordingly. Some of the quickest ways to tell if someone is taking steroids is a sudden gain in muscle growth, and sudden severe acne. We must educate the young athletes beginning in elementary school like we do with other drugs as well as teach young athletes healthy alternatives to steroid use such as proper nutrition and healthy
