Harm De Bliji Summary

As the book starts out it emphasis on the five themes. The first categories is local and global. To describe global they are core countries that located just about anywhere. Most times global are wealthy people who spread out amongst the country. Whereas, locals are the people who grew up in a local town and carry traditions out from the past. The locals are people who grew up among their community and don’t communicate with other countries do to they were never taught to go out among other countries. Locals are known to barricaded themselves from society, and don’t know what’s out there amongst the world (de Blij 2009, 93). Globalization is happening to due to languages are dying off as reference in the De Bliji book. Languages that are in the industry are becoming more popular like English is an example. This also comes from when people are combining two languages together to be able to communicate with others throughout the world, this is when culture region comes into play. “As culture region it is a grouping of similar places of a functional union under spatial unit (Bychkov 4). However, as the book takes on earthquakes and hurricanes. They are describing how man-made objects can destroy any landscape. They are using cultural landscapes as an example in the book. When something is destroyed how people as a community come together to rebuild it. This shows how globalization came along with major cities and how it is linked. The themes they are talking about is how there are power within the cities. Most major cities attract markets and other places throughout the world to make revenue for money to rebuild buildings (de Blij 2009,
