Harlingen First Assembly Case Study

Improved Essays
Introduction My current ministry context is being the Lead Pastor of Harlingen First Assembly. First Assembly is a small, traditional Assemblies of God church located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas. Being their pastor for the past five years has given me the opportunity to observe their personality traits, their interactions with other people, and their willingness to serve the local church. Like many small churches, Harlingen First Assembly has a core nucleus of people who fill various roles. As a result, the need for motivation, teams, coaching, and mentoring are imperative for the church’s future success. This paper seeks to examine the Harlingen First Assembly’s current condition in light of principles prescribed in the fields of motivation, teams, coaching, and mentoring.
Motivation
Motivation is imperative for a successful church. Dr. Bartel (2016) describes motivation as, “The human force that initiates, guides and sustains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what cause humankind to act

Katzenbach (1998) argues, “A common level of commitment to a meaningful purpose and set of goals are absolutely essential to motivate and energize a team” (p. 219). Katzenbach insists that team members must be committed to the purpose and goals prescribed by the team if the team expects to be successful. Consequently, I do not see team members display a common commitment. Moreover, several of the teams are not effectively ministering. The lack of commitment has drained enthusiasm from the team. The final element that is needed from the ministry teams at Harlingen First Assembly is accountability. The ministry teams at the church must be held accountable for the implementation of the church’s mission and purpose statements, as well as for the attainment of the ministry’s goals. Unfortunately, there is a lack of mutual accountability among team

Some of us had testimonies of more stable lives, others of cultural Christian influences, and finally, those of us who had been in spiritual abusive situations at one point or another. As a whole, most of us had been hurt by the church at one time, and for many us, this small group was a way to possibly heal and reach back out in Christian community once more. We hadn’t been meeting for very long when this project was first started. Demographically speaking, the group was on the younger end. Stretching between the ages of…

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

In 2016, Bethany Baptist Church celebrates eighty-four years of ministry in the Highlands area of Louisville. The church’s peak membership of more than 1,100 people occurred in the 1970’s, during the ministry of the senior pastor with the longest tenure at Bethany—a tenure of twenty-four years. From 1986 to 2010, the church saw five senior pastors come and go, with an average pastoral tenure of less than four years. At the time of my call to serve as senior pastor in 2011, much work had recently been done to ensure that membership rolls were up to date and accurate. The church’s membership stood at approximately 230 people, with an average attendance of 105 people in Sunday morning worship services.…

This paradigm does not share the same emphasis as the clerical, church or liberation paradigms but is focused on the person in the pew but is intended for the layman who is seeking after a deeper meaning for their lives. According to Dingmans, this paradigm is still emerging. The spiritual fitness of the associate minister enhanced through the mentoring of spiritual disciplines can assist in the spiritual growth of the individuals within the congregation. These newly enriched practices of the associate minister are born out the regeneration of the praxis of the servant leader through the use of practical theology.…

While Baxter describes from his own point of view, Witmer harmonizes with Baxter including other points. Firstly, in this essay, we will be comparing and contrast, Timothy Witmer’s framework for leadership with his “old shepherd friend” Richard Baxter in The Reformed Pastor (1657) Secondly, we are going to Evaluate Witmer’s framework for leadership in which extant is biblical, practical and relevant to my personal context. Finally, there will be a Self-assess of my personal leadership in the church and home against this (modified) framework, with explaining strength and…

Five Key Pieces to the Puzzle of Church Administration by Derrick M. Hammond Derrick M. Hammond is an ordained Minister and the Church Business Administrator of First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA. Over time, the concept of church administration has evolved greatly. Biblically, church administration begins with concepts depicted in passages such as Exodus 18 (Moses and Jethro) and Acts 6 (Apostles and Deacons), where church leaders chose godly believers who were able to give their attention to other responsibilities that distracted the leader from his or her primary calling. While this basic idea has remained, the evolving nature of the “other responsibilities” in churches has caused much confusion about what church administration…

When wanting to know how to be a leader or give your employees some motivation, reading the book Business: Through the Eyes of Faith by Chewning, Eby, and Roels will give you some great guidelines. Chewning et al. give great examples and stories to which you can see what your own reaction to the situation would have been, along with some great follow up questions for reflection. I really enjoyed the parts at the end of the chapter that gives you some Bible verses to explore and see how the Bible would give you instruction on different situations. The topics that I thought pertained more to me and would help me in my husband’s business are those of motivation, communication, and being a Christian leader.…

I started the interview by asking Pastor Jacque to describe her call to ministry. More precisely I asked her to describe her calling from the time she first received it up until now. During this question Pastor Jacque began by telling me about her background and early life.
