Harley's Sacrifice: A Short Story

Improved Essays
The next day when Harley woke up, she got dressed and headed to breakfast with the rest of the Hermes cabin. After breakfast they studied ancient Greek with Annabeth, and it was the first time Harley could read anything without trouble.
Next they had archery with the Apollo cabin counselor and Harley hit the bullseye every time with her bow and arrows, making the counselor look at her with concern. They went to lunch where Harley got to know some of the Hermes' cabin better. She met with Annabeth later and they sat on the dock, watching the water nymphs weave baskets under the water. "What do you think about camp so far?" She asked Harley who shrugged. "I think it's okay, I just want to get claimed though." She replied and Annabeth nodded

After making a sacrifice to the Gods she sat down with her cabin and ate, hungry from the days work. They left and went back to their cabin, Harley changed and slept.

Harley did the same routine for a week and still hadn't gotten claimed. She knew it could take a while, but some of the kids in the cabin had been there for years and hadn't been claimed. During that time however three kids were claimed and were moved out of the cabin. Harley spent most of her time either at the archery range or on the dock. When she would sit alone on the dock, she would take off her necklace and stare at the silver charm. Was it a gift from her parent or something else?
She would analyze it, looking for some clue as to where or who it was from, but got no answer. Regardless of who gave the necklace to her, it still worked better than any other bow and arrow she had tried.
Harley often wondered about her other parent the most. Losing her mother had been the hardest thing in her life, but she hoped she could have a connection with her other parent. She had often thought that she was a child of Apollo. The cabin had tried to get her claimed, but she couldn't sing or write poetry to save her

All around Harley was talk of Olympus. "Attention everyone!" Mr. D called as he stood at the head of the tables. The pavilion was silent was he spoke. "We will be taking our annual trip to Olympus for the Winter Solstice, but we will be doing something different. Usually we take the long time campers, but this year all campers will go."
At this all of the cabins cheered and Harley was excited, hearing about Olympus from Annabeth. The cabins went back, talking even louder.

A few weeks later it was time. They all packed up their things and got onto faded yellow school buses. The Hermes cabin was riding with Athena and Demeter, so Annabeth sat next to Harley. The trip was long and Annabeth nearly bored Harley to tears with her architecture plans.
Finally they arrived at the Empire State building and their bus was the first ones in the elevator. Harley stood next to Luke and listened intently as he told her about his many trips to Olympus. The group reached the six-hundred floor, and when they stepped out, Harley couldn't believe her eyes. All around her were markets where lesser Gods hung around, the roads were paved with gold, and all around her she could see the sky. At the sides of the gold roads were clouds and Harley reached out to touch one, feeling that it was soft and plush. Behind the market, a paved mountain spiraled up, decorated with majestic

Those who work for the house display the family’s mourning customs in order to bring light to what they experienced. In image one, the photo pictured is of braided hair of the deceased within a necklace or a broach. This was worn during the mourning process and after the death, in order to carry a piece of the lost with them at all times. It served as a comfort, and also as a small fashion statement due to the intricate braids within the piece.…

Mrs. Joseph Van Bliven was fortunate: a bubble bath loving woman who enjoyed treating herself for pleasure, and perhaps staging crimes to receive money? Mysterious broken glass, a rummaged through jewelry box, and statements that do not add up with the time frame- all of these lead to an implausible excuse for Mrs. Van Bliven’s confusion as to why her necklace “disappeared”. To begin with, even the laws of science prove that if you push something, it will move in that direction. Mrs. Van Bliven did not begin to think when she broke the window of her balcony door. She broke the door from the inside of her hotel room, trying to create a crime scene that would show someone broke in.…

The Difficulties Endured by Anne Frank & Eva Galler “Only the bad laws applied to us, that we couldn't walk on a sidewalk, only in the middle of the street. And we wear a star that everybody should recognize us. But it wasn't a law that somebody couldn't kill us. That law didn't apply to us,”(Menszer, “The Holocaust Survivors”). This is just another heartbreaking reminder of how the Nazis treated the Jewish people.…

Mrs. Van Bliven clearly stole her own necklace because the crime scene was not legitimate and because she needed to collect the insurance money from the necklace. First of all, the French doors were securely locked before the necklace was stolen. This evidence is important to proving Mrs. Van Bliven guilty of stealing her own necklace because no one else could have gotten in and stolen the necklace if the doors were locked. In addition, if Schmidt, Mrs. Van Bliven’s neighbor at the hotel, had tried to access the hotel room by tampering with the door, there would have been physical evidence- such as a broken door knob- at the crime scene. After consulting the crime scene photographs, it was clear the only tampering with the door could have been done from the inside.…

She said, “O gods, these shall be my lapis necklace, lest I forget, I shall be mindful of these days and not forget, not ever!” (Foster, 90). Her necklace served as a way to memorialize the human beings that died due to the genocide. Essentially, the necklace contained a variety of different colored jewels, which was meant to symbolize a rainbow and represent her pledge to remember to never forget the horrific act of genocide committed. Evidently, this showed how the gods repented for their actions and felt remorseful for the actions.…

At least she hadn't slipped into unconsciousness, or drifted into a coma, elicited by the loss of blood, an adrenaline rush comedown and shock at all that happened in the past twenty-four hours, which is what he'd been afraid of, too busy piloting the helicopter, to be able to stop and assist, or keep her awake. Just a few more minutes, he'd kept telling himself, as he'd landed and thrown the water in her face, and then he'd take care of her, and attempt to put all right. And from her reaction, after he'd unceremoniously glared at him, then struggled out of the Chopper, and muttered her thoughts of him under her breath, he'd just exponentiallly increased the acts that he'd need to apologise before. Agent asshole indeed! That utterance brought a quick smile to his lips - if she had enough energy to insult him, she'd have enough to make it to the cabin on her own two feet, however, this time he made the sane decision not to respond in kind, or with sarcasm.…

The earrings that hang from her ears are elaborately decorated very similarly to the extent of her lowest headband, but it isn’t clear if they show the same pattern. Continuing down her body, her neck appears to be smooth, and her chin is free from it. On her neck hang three separate, highly decorated necklaces. The necklace closest to her chin is the shortest and shows several arrays of small beads all connected by a smoother curved band. The middle necklace is longer and thicker than the first necklace, but is similar in composition.…
