My parents didn’t know any english either which made everything so much more difficult. As the eldest child in my family, I was pressured the most to learn english. With the little english that I knew, I would have to make phone calls to the hospital to make appointments for my mom who at the time was very ill. Not only that, at times I would have to miss school, and accompany my parents to these appointments and translate of no one spoke english. I even had to go to the supermarket with my parents because they were afraid of someone asking them something and them not being able to reply. Through all the tasks I had to do at home I would notice my progression. I was very impressed on how quickly I was learning english. By the time I was in 5th grade, I was able to speak, read, and write in english at a very proficient level. Everyone was very proud of me, especially my teachers. I would at times score a lot higher in many exams than some of my classmates who were born
