Northup, Solomon. 12 Years A Slave. Originally published in 1853 by Derby & Miller. (240 pages)

12 Years A Slave, by Solomon Northup is a memoir and personal narrative about the hardships of slavery during the 1800’s. An autobiography written jam packed with several specific accounts of mistreatment in the black community. While reporting, Solomon did not want to provide any bias or discrepancies in the story. To prove that there has been no alteration in the story he has been asked to repeat the story several times, but without even the slightest of change there is no reason to believe otherwise. He has “also carefully perused the manuscript, dictating an alteration wherever the most trivial inaccuracy has appeared.” –David Wilson (editor).

The story simply goes along in chronological order which allows myself, the reader, to easily understand what is taking place. Solomon Northup being a very well educated man takes on some very sophisticated language in his writing. Having previous high class education affected the way the author wrote this book. Another factor to take into consideration while reading was the time when it was written. “I dare not show any lenity.” Several times throughout the book Solomon uses subtle hints as to when this autobiography was written by the way he words certain things. The reading level of this book would be considered very high as knowledge of complex language and ability to understand writing from previous era’s is needed. The evidence presented in this book is extremely believable as the editor’s preface confirms all doubts someone may have as this is an autobiography. 12 Years A Slave proves to be a very educational piece of literature as the reader is put through two perspectives of life. The view of a free man and a slave shows two very diverse sides of life. This book is very shocking and educational as we see what the truth is behind the unfair life of slavery. There is several scenes that left a lasting sight in my head because of the vision used in the writing. A scene where Solomon had acted out towards his master and in punishment was subject to death by being hung from a tree. “As the sun approached the meridian that day it became insufferably warm. Its hot rays scorched the ground. The earth almost blistered the foot that stood upon it. I was without a hat, standing bald headed, exposed to the burning blaze.” Barely staying alive by the very tips of his toes, Solomon was in for a tough ride for survival. This story is educational for all audiences as the truths of slavery are

I am going to start by saying i thoroughly enjoyed this book and think especially right now it is so relevant with some of the issues we are facing right now in media with the police shootings and things going on with our president. Fredrick Like most people who write books about their own lives goes on with basic things like talking about age in that current part of the book, family, birthdays, early memories and things like that that which normally are introductions to a person. Well the first basic thing like him talking about his age is where u start seeing the dehumanizing effects of slavery in this book, also the first…

Throughout the book, 12 Years A Slave, the author Solomon Northup decided to share his memoir. Northup gives an illustration via his book describing how his rights as a man were stripped away after being born and raised a freeman in the northern states; Saratoga, New York. The book describes deceivements, which subjected black men into slavery. Black men were sold as property to white plantation owners to do the grueling work and suffer punishments as their owners saw fit. Slavery is appalling and even today those practices of deceivement still work; although, nowadays those practices are not used specifically for slavery they are nonetheless cruel and illicit.…

One quote from the chapter that really stood out to me and put this whole thing in perspective was “The North for blacks was not the promise land. Although they were not slaves, they were hardly free”. Another thing I thought was really interesting was Fredrick Douglass’s story. I’ve heard about him many times before but, it was always just a brief overview of his roll in history, never in depth like in this book.…

In 12 Years a Slave, it is identifiable that Solomon is very skilled with his hands. He has great engineering capabilities which showcase his great skillset. In the film, Solomon is telling Master Ford how it would be easier to use the waterway as mode of transportation rather than walking them all the way around the water. Tibeats does not like this idea because Solomon shows how smart he really is, but, Ford allows Solomon to execute his greatly engineered plan. Once Solomon’s plan is finished and it is shown just how good it is, Ford commends Solomon for his great work with a hand shake and laughter, (12 Years a Slave).…

The story takes place in the mid 1800’s, where slavery is legal and society believes this is what the Bible tells them is okay. In Exodus 21:6 it states “then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.” Many took this to say that slavery is not only generally accepted in the bible, but profitable, and believe it or not socially ethical.…

In the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” by Frederick Douglass he illustrates the life and struggles as he was a slave. Douglass tells his story of being born and kept as a slave, and his escape to the North in his early twenties, in a style that depicts the evil he experienced and/or observed in Maryland. Such as, being removed from his mother's care by the age of one, with almost no contact allowed with her for the rest of his life and being clothed as a child only in a knee-length shirt, summer or winter. Also, having no provision for beds or bedding except for a single blanket. Not to forget the atrocities of routine rape of women to increase slaveholders' assets and wealth; which can make anybody’s stomach turn.…
