What is behind the bonhomie between Nitish Kumar and Hardik Patel?

Gujarat's firebrand leader Hardik Patel was in Patna on Tuesday. Patel was barred from entering his home state by the court after he spearheaded the quota agitation for Patidars, the traditional BJP supporters who are currently at odds with the party. The 23-year-old leader has been residing in Rajasthan ever since the court order.

What attracted the attention of political pundits during Patel's Patna visit was the VIP treatment accorded to him by the state government. He headed straight from the airport to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's residence. Kumar gave him a warm welcome. Both leaders spent over an hour together over the lunch.

Hardik Patel's invited Nitish Kumar for a Kisan Sammelan to be held in Gujarat next month. The latter accepted the courtesy. Patel left the state capital after attending a meeting called to discuss expanding the Patel Nav Nirman Sena to Bihar. Nobody can pre-empt his strategy. He has already broken the record of state's first Chief Minister Shri Krishna Singh's record as the longest serving Chief Minister. There is little left for him to prove in state politics. Therefore, he has set his eyes upon the national politics. This means Nitish Kumar has to emerge as the focal point of anti-Modi politics. Currently, only Arvind Kejriwal matches him in this regard. The latter has also tried to woo Hardik Patel in his own way. However, Patel has given cold shoulder to the Delhi Chief Minister. He has invited H D Devegowda, Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar to the Kisan Sammelan while keeping Kejriwal out of his guest list.
