The political game is a dog eat dog world, there are many factors that determined whether a politician will make it or break it. Having alliances, enemies, and compromises is all part of the job. In the book “Hardball: How Politics Is Played” written by Chris Mathews he explains that anyone can get ahead and play the game of politics but, the secret to the game is, one must have a certain advantage/quality over the average politician, and they use this quality of theirs to make any disadvantage into an advantage. And the lessons Chris states in the book that gives a person an advantage are these. For Example, LBJ joined the senate as a Democrat in 1949, and by the end of 1952 he became the Democratic Leader. The way LBJ achieve this major accomplishment was his way of talking to people “Retail Politics”, he made his peers feel that their problems where his too, and the less people there where the more he could work his way with them; this was called the “Johnson treatment”. This technique was what got him to become the Democratic Party leader he wasn’t a good public speaker but he used his advantage, on one to one communication to out way his public speaking skills. In the same way that LBJ used this advantage of knowing people George H.W. Bush used this same strategy to help him out in the, Persian Gulf War. With out the knowledge of people that George H.W. Bush knew before becoming President the Persian Gulf War would have dragged on past his Presidency. Besides, “Retail Politics” there is “Wholesale Retail” when used correctly it captures the audience, Ronald Reagan was the best when it came to public speaking, and fireside chats because he would capture his audience into seeing what he see’s.
