Hard To Find Symbolism

What are symbols? “Symbols are the imaginative signposts of life,” (Asquith). In other words, they represent ideas and qualities that the author chose to collaborate with their story. Without symbols, today's novels would be nothing but words on a page. In a novel, symbols could be represented by images, situations or even characters that have been encountered by the protagonist. However, not all symbols are in plain sight. Some may require a little more observation and effort to be noticed. For instance, in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, a majority of the families and characters represent a different meaning. These meanings are exposed by their actions or appearances. evil is a major theme commonly found in A Good Man is Hard to Find. A family of six is on their way to Florida for a family trip. They symbolize the good. However, they cross paths with the Misfit and his two accomplices, whom symbolize the evil. The Misfit and his accomplices are escaped convicts. Supposedly the Misfit killed his father; however, he believes otherwise. There were also other symbols throughout the story. When O’Connor says, “a cotton field with five or six graves fenced” (O’Connor 353), he is symbolizing the family’s impending death through the gravestones because there are six family members. Likewise, the Misfit’s car is a hearse, which symbolizes death as well. When O’Connor said, “ Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (O’Connor 187), he’s showing the symbolism between the hat and the grandmother’s moral code. When the grandmother became involved in the car accident, the hat was ruined. Like her hat, her moral convictions fell apart. Irony sets in when the grandmother actually ends up dead on the side of the road. Symbols in this story were simpler to depict because the majority of them were just objects mentioned in the …show more content…

The woman was trying to break free from the wallpaper. There are two symbols within the wallpaper. The woman trying to escape symbolizes women around the world and their effort to break free from society’s image of women. Society views women as weak people that stay at home and have little significance. The woman in the wallpaper seeks to escape society’s image of her. The wallpaper, on the other hand, symbolizes the domestic life that traps the woman. When the narrator had the baby, she knew her life would never be the same. This is why she related to the woman in the wallpaper so easily. With a child to take care of, the narrator felt as if she was going to be forced to live the domestic lifestyle in order to take care of the baby. The narrator is so severely broken spiritually and mentally that she becomes one with the women who “takes hold of the bars” of her prison and “shakes them hard” in a frantic effort to get free (Gilman). This effort becomes reality as the narrator tears down the yellow wallpaper, symbolizing the stripping away of her husband and society’s confining principles. As she disposes of the wallpaper, she also rids herself from her all-powerful husband and the morals, which have been imposed upon her for all of her life. The wallpaper symbolizes the elements of family, medicine, and customs, as well as the domestic life that imprisons the narrator and many other women. With the wallpaper, her metaphorical prison, gone, she feels free to be her own person and free to discard of the mold that forces women to tend to the house and fit seamlessly into a “world of masculine order and domestic routine”: “‘I’ve got out at last...…

This metaphor is interesting because she is seeing someone else suffer from the same thing she is. She sees a woman trying to escape from the gender roles in society and try and be free to do her own thing, much like the narrator herself. The narrator lives her life through the woman in the wallpaper; because she pictures her going outside in the daylight and pictures her doing things that she would never be allowed to do herself. In the end of the story the woman tears the wallpaper off of the wall. Halfway through her doing this, her husband walks in.…

In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style, a work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the tone of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story. Her take on the characters is a complex mixture of agreement and disapproval.…

In the late 1800’s, the dynamic of men and women made it so women were inferior to men. Women were looked upon as having no impact on society other than to have children and take care of the home. It was difficult for women to express themselves in a world controlled by men. The men held the jobs, received educations, and ruled society. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator experiences this kind of control from her husband, John.…

In an attempt to free the woman and herself, the narrator tears away at the wallpaper in the final moments of the story. This is the narrator’s way of liberating herself from what society expects from her as a woman. In doing so, she knows that she must completely detach from herself. Quawas writes, “Upon recognition of the wallpaper woman, who in this story clearly represents not only the narrator's own divided self but all women who are bound and inhibited by a society that insists that women are childlike and incapable of self-actualization, the narrator begins a descent into the vicarious experience of madness through a virtually…
