“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor has been one of the most interesting stories I have ever come across. The story revolves around a family who decide to go on a vacation to Florida, toting along their grandmother. Along the way, the family encounters ‘The Misfit,’ a runaway criminal. O’Connor writes the characters of the grandmother and The Misfit, who at first glance seem so different from each other, yet throughout the short story, share underlying similarities. The grandmother and The Misfit possess two different views on how they think of themselves.…

The grandmother displays her arrogance throughout the whole story putting her own personal wants before everyone else. Along with her arrogance she is manipulative and is saying “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that on the loose” (O’Connor 299) referring to the misfit being loose in Florida. She is trying to convince bailey using guilt to take the family to Tennessee instead of Florida for her connections. Also stating “the children have been to Florida before… they have never been to east Tennessee” (O’Connor 299).…

"Youthful Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O 'Connor both have characters who permit their lives to be changed by the risk of malice. An alternate route taken wreaks devastation on the family in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" though, the wrong way taken in "Youthful Goodman Brown" leads Brown to lose hope. Chestnut and the Grandmother have distinctive states of mind and take separate methodologies toward wickedness. On the other hand, they both in the long run wind up disengaged from society. Abhorrence exists in both stories as adventures are made down the wrong way.…

In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” a family is going on a trip to Florida, but the grandmother would rather go to Tennessee to visit some connections she has there. Her actions to try and alter the destination of the family vacation can be interpreted as selfish and persistent. For example, she tries to persuade her son, Bailey, to take them to a Tennessee by mentioning that a criminal, The Misfit, has escaped from federal prison and is heading to Florida. She notices that her son does not acknowledge her comment and adds that the children, John Wesley and June Star, have already been to Florida, that it would be better for them to visit a new place. She is only using the criminal and her grandchildren as an excuse, to go to…

In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, redemption is achieved through The Misfit, a character who is ironically anything but a “good” man. His grisly intentions and actions represent the uniqueness of O’Connor’s writing style when she characterizes The Misfit with twisted and inexcusable perceptions. The deliberateness of the story is clear when The Misfit escapes a federal penitentiary and flees towards Florida where he murders an unsuspecting and unfortunate family. The selfish grandmother of the family pleads to travel to Tennessee instead of Florida because she fears The Misfit and is unaware of the horrid and cynical event that will occur. Unfortunate and costly mistakes lead to a devastating and brutal finish for the family…

This article has almost everything I need to support the idea of the grandmother’s selfishness and personality, from the way she pleaded for her life to the reasons why she used those exact pleads. The article even points out that she was like this from the beginning when she wanted to go to Tennessee and tried to convince Bailey to go. As for the Misfit, this article has some support for his character. One example for the Misfit would be his lack of any faith or emotion in his…

“She knew that Bailey would not be willing to lose any time looking at an old house, but the more she talked about it, the she wanted to see it once again and find out if the little twin arbors were still standing””(O’Connor 455). She is the one who insisted on turning back to see the old plantation. Once again it shows how self-centered and selfish she is. When they meet with Misfit, grandmother is the one who recognizes him. If she was smart enough to be quite Misfit probably would let them go.…
