There are several acts of heroism felt throughout the history of mankind. One of the prominent example is the embracing of non-violent civil disobedience that led india to independence from Great Britain in 1947. The here that we are talking about is non other that Mahatma Gandhi who inspired movement for civil rights and freedom across the globe. Gandhi was born to a privilege family in india. However, he never mistook that privilege a granted, instead he pursued the philosophical study of religions while he was offered opportunity of furthering studies at University college London. He spent 21 years of his life in south Africa where he railed against the injustice of social segregation against “apartheid” system there. He was once denied entry into first class train carriage citing not meeting criteria to be first class citizen. The racial biases that he witnessed there served as catalyst for non-viloent protest into a tangible political stance, against standing fro rights. Upon returning to india, he flourished his practice of non-violent civil disobedience, raising voice against oppressive British regime. He instigated boycott of british goods and institutions and famously led “250 miles march to the sea” to collect his own salt, when british introduced tax on salt in 1930. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was born on 15 January 1929 and graduated as valedictorian at Crozer theological seminary in 1951. He became pastor of Baptist church in Montgomery, AL and later completed his Post Doctorate. He was a religious man, a pastor elected and raised voice against separate but equal laws, terrible treatment of people of color in United States. He said,” This is absolutely wrong. This is against the willingness of God. This is not recognizing dignity of people”. He made us face that in very powerful ways. On the eve of Rosa Parks refusal to move to the back of city bus in 1955, king was chose to lead city wide bus boycott. Two years later, king and group of civil rights activists from Southern Christians Leadership Conference(SCLC) to conduct non-viloent protest for civil right. When Dr. King led the Alabama boycott that was a major turning point in the fight for civil rights movement. Inspired by Gandhi’s activism King worked with SCLC to organize black voters and civil rights protest. He was man of God who believed that calling necessitated social change in the present and he put his life on the line for that calling.
