Hararrassment: A Big Problem Of Transgender Students

Improved Essays
Harassment, is a big problem in today’s school systems, because it’s the “plaintiffs” word against the “defendants”. According to Webster.com, harassment means to annoy or bother (someone) in a constant or repeated way: to make repeated attacks against (an enemy). (..) Most transgender students will keep it a secret, not letting teachers or administrators know what is going on because they are ashamed and think it will do more harm than good. You hit like a girl”, is something that you would hear in early education. In middle school and high school that is a totally different ballgame. In these grades you will hear derogatory words such as “sissy, dike, queer” just to name a few. With the increase in transgender students, teachers have to learn …show more content…
Transgender students face much higher levels of harassment and violence than LGB students (….). These students face attacks in schools ranging from being bumped to being seriously injured because they are who they are. These students don’t have to do anything wrong and still will be victimized. Many transgender students had been physically assaulted (e.g. Punched, kicked, or injured with a weapon), in school in the past year because of their sexual orientation (28%) and their gender expression (26%). () One of the biggest types of violence these students face is sexual assault. For example, being followed in the restroom by other students. In today 's society student are often picked on by the way their appearance and the way they act, and because they are transgender makes it ten times worse. Taking a look at students and their environments are often the problems. Growing up around anti-gay or anti transgender families, and watching television shows that being transgender is wrong gives students a different view of others. Judging someone by the way they act is totally wrong, but some students don 't look at it that way because of their "rep" trying to keep up with popularity. So hitting someone or sexually assaulting them may be cool in their eyes. Students may not understand the term of needing someone they hurt, but farther in life the victim may be the one to help them. So students and teachers needs to learn to never judge a book by its cover because it 's what inside that matters. Once a transgender student has been a victim of violence they can then turn into the violent person. A person can only take so much before they explode. Transgender students are tired of being picked on and having a life filled with loneliness, fear and self-hatred. They may not turn to violence against their peers, the majority of times it’s against themselves which

Reading Response Synthesis: The two themes in this week’s reading, “Get That Freak: Homophobia and Transphobia in High Schools” are, the negative role of high school teachers and administrators towards homophobic and transphobic bullying and the impact Canada’s multicultural society has on homosexual and transsexual individuals. The reading surprised me when they talked about the negative role that teachers had when it came to homophobic and transphobic bullying in high school. Teachers are considered to be role models for students and by having a negative perspective on LGBTQ individuals they unconsciously give permission to students to have a negative attitude towards it. The case study of Dias and Mark are only a few examples of how teachers and administration enforce a negative attitude towards LGBTQ individuals.…

Many of us are out of touch with our fellow citizen's hardships and do not acknowledge the lack of opportunity that exists for some of the least privileged members of our communities and fails to recognize the great adversity they face. There should be more federal anti-discrimination laws to protect the civil rights of all transgender people especially in public settings such as schools, athletics, and employment. Today many young transgender men and women face debilitating discrimination on a daily basis at all levels and sectors of life. For many of them, the disparaging and hateful discrimination can start at a young age in school and haunt them into their adulthood when seeking employment even when they are just as or more qualified as…

When referring to the case, transgender students do not have the same liberties that normal students have. Instead, they receive threats and harassment in public facilities such as bathrooms, because of their decision to change their gender identity. According to Rawls, if transgendered students do not have the same liberties as normal students, normal students do not have the authority to deprive them of their liberties on deciding which bathroom to use. Moreover, King argues that one has a moral responsibility to obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. A law to protect transgendered students such as California’s School Success and Opportunity Act (AB1266) is an example of a just law and therefore should be obeyed by…

Bullying and Intersectionality Though many research studies focus on LGBT+ youth in comparison to heterosexual youth, or the differences in gender, there are few studies that focus on the different identities of an individual together and compare the intersectionality between such individuals. Intersectionality is the “recognition of multiple interlocking identities that are defined in terms of relative sociocultural power and privilege and shape people’s individual and collective identities and experiences” (Parent et al, 2013, p.640). It is recognizing that the different identities of an individual (gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class) are not independent, but interact with each other to form the collective identity, beliefs, and experiences…

Ingersoll, an orator of United States during the Golden Age of Free Thought. Although the rights of Lesbian, Gay Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Canadians have advanced rapidly over the last decade, both societally and legally, there is still a long journey ahead on the road to equality. The issue of LGBTQ inequality and discrimination is one that is extremely important to Canadians because LGBTQ discrimination affects a significant portion of Canadian citizens. Sherlie Prince Professor Fine ENC 1102 17 February 2018 Argue: Is the use of gender-neutral language important? Why or why not The use of gender-neutral language is important because it provides the platform for women rights to be represented, it enables parents to direct children questions in gender identity, and it enable society to clearly communicate to all. As society filters and adjusts to the signs of the times, it struggles to find a balance without taking a stand. It is not by accident, but by divine appointment that society strives to define the very things it cannot explain.…
