Harambe the gorilla splashed through the water of his Cincinnati zoo enclosure as he protected Isiah, a child that had fallen into his chamber. The panicked visitors screamed and shouted as they feared for Isiah’s life. Suddenly, a few men wielding hunting rifles appeared. Little did Harambe know, he was breathing his last breaths, and they would be in captivity. The men launched a barrage of bullets at Harambe as he fell to the ground. What did he do to deserve this? One thing’s for sure: Harambe would not have died if this zoo didn’t exist, and he would probably still be alive today if he lived in his native habitat. Does this not show their desperation and misery? If people chose different ways to experience wildlife, these incidents would not have happened. According to an article from Peta, at the Dallas Zoo, Jabari the gorilla tried to escape his enclosure by jumping a wall. This tragically resulted in a police officer shooting him. His death would not have occurred if the zoo ceased to exist and if people observed animals differently. To add onto that, an article from Vice informs us that in Tbilisi, Georgia (Transcaucasia), a flood caused a zoo to collapse resulting in the escapement of dangerous wildlife like tigers and lions. Soon after the animals escaped, a man was slaughtered by an escaped tiger. If these animals were in their native environment and weren’t sold into captivity, that man would still be alive today. It may be true that zoos offer great experiences for children and adults to see animals and other wildlife. Where else would people living in cities get to see gorillas, monkeys, and other animals? However, the entertainment of other people is not worth it at the cost of an animal’s happiness. As Alison Benjamin of The Guardian asks, “Where’s the enjoyment in seeing magnificent creatures behind bars?” There really is no enjoyment in seeing great creatures in pain and misery, and animals deserve their freedom and better treatment. These innocent creatures are suffering for literally no reason other than their wicked owners having nothing better to do. An article from Peta reads that animals are often times force bred at zoos only to be sold away to some faraway land. Is this not abuse? How would you feel if your kid was stolen from your own hands? These animals should have been treated with better care. A video from The Guardian shows that in South Korea, a baby bear was placed in an enclosure full of lion cubs for entertainment (television). Naturally, the abused bear freaked out. If this misconduct is entertainment for some people, then that is an embarrassment. Imagine if you were placed in a cage full of lion cubs. This same video shows that in Sri Lanka, elephants have been chained to concrete and then beaten by men to balance on small stools. To be honest, this is basically slavery as the corrupt owners abused their animals for their own selfish gains. Others may think that animals are more protected in zoos than harmed. Though this is true for some zoos, there is still an enormous amount of them that cause more problems rather than resolving them. An article from Vice tells us that a study in the UK showed that 75% of the captive elephants in the country were overweight, and only 16% could walk properly.
