Happisburgh Essay

In this essay, I am going to give my views on if the village of Happisburgh should get defenses to stop the village from getting destroyed by the destructive waves destroying the soft rock making the cliff erode. The cliff erodes at the rate of 40-45 feet or approximately 15 meters each year and in the last 15 years 26 houses have been destroyed, because of this house prices have dropped to worth only £1. Happisburgh is a village that is located at the edge of a cliff located in the county of Norfolk and is the home to over 850 people. The village had wooden sea defences known as groynes built in the late 1950’s but they have been falling into disrepair over the last few years and the council have decided not to protect the village and have decided to let it retreat and they said that local people can move into council houses if their houses get destroyed. Also, further along, the coastline the council has put coastal defenses in place.

The tourists that go to the tea room bring lots of money into the area and support this local business. Furthermore, the vicar of Happisburgh thinks that if the coast continues to disappear at a rate of 40-45 feet a year it could soon be under threat. The church is an old building worth protecting. Also, the farmer in Happisburgh says that the fields are being reduced by coastal erosion meaning they are losing their livestock meaning there will be no food. In the village.
