One hindrance to confidence is fear, for “fear is good in small amounts, but when it is a constant, pounding companion, it cuts away at who you are and makes it hard to do what you know is right” (Paolini, Inheritance). As the quote says, fear can be good; it helps people follow their instincts, but when there’s an overabundance of fear, the confidence to stand up for oneself or try something new vanishes. With the right balance, people gain the confidence needed to lead a group and stand up for themselves and others. The Silver Siren, by Chanda Hahn, is a great example of confidence. Thalia, a young girl fighting for what’s right gives a speech to a crowd of disheartened soldiers, saying that “true acts of honor don’t limit themselves to time of action and war, or to kings and queens, but become greatest when the need is greatest” (Hahn, The Silver Siren). Thalia was able to rally the troops to fight for the cause. She gave them the confidence they needed to stand up and fight. It’s hard to do what is right when the worry of being bullied or put down overcomes the decision to stand up. However, focusing on what it is that one is good at can help push away the negatives. People who know they’re good at something can often have a boost of confidence, especially when someone tells them they they’re good at it. In the end, it only matters what an …show more content…
Now, self-acceptance is in reach. The Game of Life represents this need by the retirement, because life has been lived and achieved. Now it’s time to relax. Self-acceptance is definitely hard to reach, because people look at themselves and compare themselves to other around them and all of the pressure from social media and ads definitely don’t help. So, instead, it’s much better to focus on oneself. Peekay, a young boy who was bullied throughout school found one thing that many people struggle with everyday. He said that “the power of one is above all things to believe in yourself…” (Courtenay, Power of One). Peekay realized that people will often work harder to become who they wish to be if no one is discouraging them. They need to believe in themselves, though that’s still not easy. People just want to be good at some task; they don’t want to put the work in to achieve the end goal. “The U.S. Constitution doesn’t guarantee happiness, only the pursuit of it. You have to catch up with it yourself,” said Benjamin Franklin, and he’s right (Roko, Happy). People have to work for what they want. In the end, it’s usually worth more to receive something for the work put in than to just be handed it. “As a final point, see who you are. Really see it… Stop adapting to society and start being you;” it’s important to note that once self-acceptance has been reached, there is not set end point (Hans, “Maslow 2.0”).
