Happiness In Winter Dreams

Sometimes we as humans think all we need is this specific thing in our life to make us happy but sometimes down the road we realize what we thought was really gonna make us happy, is something we wouldn't of thought of. This is where we find our true happiness. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the story “Winter Dreams”. The main character in this story is Dexter Green. This young boy works at a golf course as a caddy and as he is working he comes across this elven year old girl who is very demanding and rich. Dexter quits his job as a caddy to go to college and starts his own laundry business. He began to finally fall out of being poor and ends up making a decent living off of this business. Many men have loved this little girl even though they were older than her. As the story continues on, Judy Jones begins to express to Dexter how the man she loved is poor. Dexter had been in this situation and wasn’t sure how to react. Time and time again he tried for her but she just wasn’t interested so Dexter gave up on trying. 18 months after he met Judy he later became engaged to a woman whose name is Irene Scheerer. Dexter and Judy would later run into each other and this is where she asked him to marry her and before you know it, he accepts and leaves Irene. This relationship did not last very long. Dexter then sells his business goes to war and here we are, seven years later and Judy is married to another man. This is where we see that Dexter’s “winter dream” is no longer there. In the story of “Winter Dreams” we see that Dexter searches and believes being rich is the true answer to his happiness but when in all reality, his true happiness and dream is to have Judy …show more content…
So Dexter begins his own business and starts making money and becomes very wealthy. “He made money. It was rather amazing. After college he went to the city from which Black Bear Lake draws its wealthy patrons. When he was only twenty-three and had been there not quite two years, there were already people who liked to say: "Now there's a boy--" (page 2). Dexter had these big dreams and he was ready to succeed and he believed this was his true dream to make lots of money. He then sees the little girl, Judy Jones, who he once knew years ago. She was no longer the little eleven year old girl, she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. “She wore a blue gingham dress, rimmed at throat and shoulders with a white edging that accentuated her tan. The quality of exaggeration, of thinness, which had made her passionate eyes and downturned mouth absurd at eleven, was gone now. She was arrestingly beautiful.” (Page 3).
