Happiness In One Thousand Dollars, Initiation, And The Opportunity

Achieving true happiness is a goal for many. For some, the way to achieve that happiness is by being true to themselves. This is a theme seen in many short stories, such as: “One Thousand Dollars,” “Initiation,” and “The Opportunity”. In each of these short stories the protagonist finds happiness by being true to themselves.
To begin being true to himself, the main character, Gillian, in “One Thousand Dollars” achieve true happiness when he gave his one thousand dollars to the girl he loves. “’ I've just come from old Tolman's," he explained. "They've been going over the papers down there. They found a"—Gillian searched his memory for a legal term—"they found an amendment or a postscript or something to the will. “’ The other victory would be much harder, but she knew that it was what she wanted. It was not that she was being noble or anything. It was just that she had learned there were other ways of getting into the great hall, blazing with lights, of people and of life.’” Millicent had decided to stay out of the club she was invited to because she did not want to change. She wanted to be the person she was to be truly happy. There are many ways to find true happiness that require decisions to be made.
Elise from “The Opportunity” was offered to do her dream job in a play but she decided to quit because she believed the job was no good. “Elise stood. They were all watching. "I'm sorry it turned out this way," she said. "It was very good of you to offer me the chance." She opened the door and went out. Gloria followed and stopped her in the hall. "Is this really what you mean, darling?" she asked. "Are you really turning down this job because you think it isn't any good?"you mean, darling?" she asked. "Are you really turning down this job because you think it isn't any good?"
