Salinger, the author exposes the main character, Holden’s hidden personalities and social challenges when he is confronted with the nuns. While this is not the Holden we have come to know, he puts himself in the nun's shoes and he demonstrates the effect of a more caring Holden, also the discussion reveals that Holden constantly puts himself down and he portrays to us how he perceives society and how it can create barriers for us. The scene when Holden meets the nuns illustrates a more caring Holden by his tone and how he seems to be ‘putting himself in their shoes’. The author uses diction to demonstrate Holden’s thoughts.…

    J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, is a coming of age novel, narrated by Holden Caulfield a 17 year old teenager grappling with his transition into adulthood. Throughout the novel Holden tells us of his triumphs but mostly of his tribulations. Holden’s critical tone sets the mood for the novel in which he is constantly snarky and spiteful. Holden’s repetitive speech patterns demonstrate that his inability to change his ways of constantly criticizing everyone ultimately reflects his depression and insecurity, which is rooted in his troubled experiences. Salinger does this to convey that someone’s painful experiences can be projected onto others and used as a mechanism of self defense and as a reflection of their own troubles.…

Salinger as Holden faces the pressures of parents with high expectations, as well as his own contradictions of everyday society. After Holden is kicked out of yet another private school, he refuses to face his parents and siblings and instead chooses to wander the city heedlessly while learning important life lessons. Holden is a teenager, resisting maturity and denying the fact that adulthood fascinates him. On one occasion, he admits to his fear of change and adulthood when he says, "Sex is something I just don’t understand. I swear to God I don’t (Salinger, 63).” Rather than admit to being afraid to change, Holden invents a world all his own where adulthood is full of hypocrisy and childhood is simple and innocent. He doesn't understand the world around him and is not ready to grow up and change to fit the adult world.…

There has never been a day in this world where individuality and identity came from the acceptance of belonging. Society deems the idea that it is wellfully astonishing for someone to uphold a different “character” than everyone else. However, society does not guarantee that that “someone” would be accepted considering their difference. One specific fictional society backs up these beliefs. This fictional society is the community that takes place in The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger.…

I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be.” Through the use of figurative language, Salinger highlights Caulfield seeing himself as protector of the children which is a metaphor of him protecting the children from losing their innocence, this metaphor emphasises Caulfield’s obsession of keeping the younger children ‘pure’ and positions the reader to feel positive of his intentions towards the children. The protective feeling Caulfield has of the children demonstrates his own coming of age, that the exploration of the children’s innocence and how much he wants to preserve it indicates that he is growing up and reached a stage of his life where he realises he can make a difference.…
