Nevertheless, the wearying hunger that his family is suffering from them being able to see their loved one. Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, invites his uncle to dine with him on Christmas. Scrooge declines his nephew’s gracious offer immediately once that question hit his ears. He insists Christmas is, “… a humbug” (390) or complete and utter nonsense. Fred gives a valiant effort to get his beloved uncle on the other side of the fence pouring his love out for the Christmas season. He exclaimed, “There are many things which I have not profited… and though it has never put a scrap of gold in my pocket, I believe it has done me good and will do me good…,” (390). Following Fred’s determined attempt, Scrooge was tremendously disgusted with the words of his nephew. He couldn’t believe that someone could communicate such great locution about a time that brought him an ample amount of despair and despondency. Alternatively, Scrooge made the decision to eat all by himself instead of eating an enjoyable with his family. Fred is one element pivotal to Scrooge’s happiness, but Scrooge cannot see past his coins to witness the love of his family. The Spirit of Christmas Past renewed another excerpt in the life of Scrooge. Scrooge was taken back to see his beautiful fiancée. He freshens up the memory of Scrooge get rejected by his sweetheart. He “…did love [her],” (401) withal his heart, but he just didn’t know how to express it. Scrooge’s sweetheart was conflicted when she reached the conclusion that poor was too caught up in the money to manifest any affection. She wasn’t sure if he, “…[could] love [her]...,” (401) so the only thing she could do was break off the engagement. Losing his true love wreaked havoc on his heart and he became so sour. Scrooge was ruined when she did leave. He still shows signs of major regret when he questions the finding of his own nephew’s love. All the events that occurred in Scrooges past destroyed him. He has always thought all the riches he had was equivalent to his happiness. After all, Scrooge is taken to the present day at the Cratchit establishment. There he was to see the desperation of that family that he has an enormous impact on. He could help or devastate a whole team of people with the snap of his old, wrinkled fingers.
