Hanukkah: Selling Me To The Butcher

Decent Essays
It was about Hanukkah when I heard my owners Reuven and Leah determining whether to sell me to the butcher. I trusted my family until one day in October. Aaron my owner tied a rope around my neck while my family said goodbye. Aaron left with me into town. A couple minutes after we left town I relized this wasn't the way we usually went. I was confused and I tried to ask Aaron," where are you taking me?".but he didn't respond. As we got further and further I started to lose trust in Aaron. I loved him a lot. the sunwas shining when we left, but now it looked murky. we passed new fields, pastures and huts with thatched roofs. suddenly a large black cloud with a bluish center spread it rapidly across the sky. It was cold and it hailed.

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…

Hanukkah, also known as “the Festival of Lights,” is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated during the Jewish month of Kislev, which is the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar falling between November to late December, starting on the 25th day. This holiday commemorates the purification and rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after it was defiled by the Greek Syrians, and it is also a time for rededication to the faith. The story of Hanukkah is found in the books of Maccabees I and II that are included in the books of the Apocrypha. These books convey the events and the sacrifices in attempts to regain possession of Jerusalem, although it is not mentioned in the Hebrew bible.
