Hannen Case Study Reflection

This paper is a reflection on how I would prepare for the conversation alluded in the Hannen case study. The objectives for the conversation should focus on understanding the interests of Mr. Welch, while also focusing on mutually finding both short-term and long-term career options for him within the public sector.
Approach
This conversation might go awry very quickly if the approach used is aggressive. I’d opt for an integrative approach, using a collaboration strategy to solve the problem at hand. I would use this approach because it is very clear that Mr. Welch is unhappy in his current position. The integrative will also help to focus on understanding the interest of Mr. Welch. Additionally, I would try to put myself in the position

My BATNA would be to talk to him about his low performance at the next evaluation meeting and either fire him or try to get his resignation. However, the purpose of this paper does not cover the planning and approach to be used on the evaluation …show more content…
Good to hear you are well. I have some stuff in mind to talk about today but first I would like to hear from you about the work you did this past week. I see, and how did you like performing those tasks this past week? Is there anything you might need from the staff or me to finish those tasks? What is holding you back from finishing them?
Thank you for being sincere with me. I have some questions for you and expect that we both can be honest and sincere with each other like always. I hope you don’t feel uncomfortable, but we have had some good and candid conversations about our careers outside the office. From those conversations I got a feeling that you are not confortable in your current position, is that true? When did you start feeling that way about the work you do? I’m very sorry you are feeling that way and now I think I probably should do more to help you. This reminds me that you’ve mentioned in the past that Bernie didn’t support you to fulfill you career goals. I do not want to commit the same error. Would it make sense if we work together to find options that might help you achieve your career goals? I’ve tried my best to tailor assignments to what I assumed were your interests but I might’ve been wrong on my assumptions. Would you mind to share with me what interests you at this point in your career? Where do you see yourself five years from now? How about ten years from now? I honestly think we could work together to find

When reflecting on my time at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck (BHFS) that is rapidly approaching its closure, one word comes to my mind and that is “refined”. My time at BHFS has refined skills in the following: basic office protocol, off the cuff research, congressional research, legislative tracking/research, and daily professional interactions. When asked if my desired outcome was reached I would answer with resounding “yes”, I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to intern and learn at BHFS. Outcome/Goals Before departing to DC, I had two goals, 1) pin point a clear direction to pursue a career in lobbying/government relations 2) experience everything DC has to offer.…

There are ways of handling this case differently from employer and employee. Let's start with the hiring phase: 1. The employer did not ask the candidate any questions about his ability to perform the job (asking questions can help you decide if the candidate is fit for the job). 2. The employer failed to ask if there are any issues with the availability to attend these days/hours and mandatory meetings (Addressing the issues of hours and days during interviews will cause fewer problems during their time at the company).…

Hello Ms. Finkelman, I would like to express my sincere thanks that you have taken time out of your schedule to work with me on my Vocational Rehabilitation Case. I’m aware that you made an exception to your busy schedule to even see me on Monday, 26 October, at 10:30 am. That is why I wanted to ensure that I express my thoughts to you in a written correspondence that you might reference in my absence. Requesting vocational rehabilitation services to attain a doctoral degree is not the normal; I know and fully understand that; however I would like VA to know by doing so they will be fulfilling a lifetime goal of a disabled Veteran.…

In Breaking the bargain, Donald Savoie explores the bargain between public servants, ministers, and parliament as they make up the administrative and political parts of Canadian governance. To be more precise, Savoie examines the “territory” between permanent and elected officials in bureaucracy and democracy within Canada (2003, p. 3). In terms of his thesis, Savoie’s central thesis is “the traditional bargain between politicians and public servants is coming unglued, and the space that was once established to determine who is responsible for what is no longer clear” (2003, p. 7-8). In fact, the definition of the bargain has been left for politicians and public servants to figure out and the consequence was the breaking of the traditional bargain between the administrative and political processes in Canada (Savoie, 2003, p. 7). Savoie also argues that the line between politics and…

It was a lovely day and I was able to attend the unit meeting. Our care manager discussed a lot of pertinent information that can improve the quality of care that we are giving to the residents in the unit. She emphasised about the completion of short term care plans, bowel book and incident forms. She also reminded the staff regarding the incoming staff auditing, infection control policies, management of outbreak and confidentiality of the residents. In addition, she informed all the staff to keep the medicine cupboards locked at all times, avoid overfilling the white bags and be aware of the toileting needs of the residents.…

The case study I found the most interesting was “Learning and Developmental Theory: a case study about a 31-year-old African American man named Taron. According to the case study “Taron grew up in a very conservative, professional, and disciplined household for things such as behavior and relationships. However; things that were constructive and positive, the entire family was very supportive and liberal”. Taron was the youngest sibling and the way he grew up, he never really spoke much in his family. He was very obedient to his parents and had his older siblings to look up to.…

Good morning and thank you for giving me the privilege of speaking to you today. As you look around the room this morning, you will recognize that every person in here is different to a certain degree. Some of you may be left handed, while the rest of you are right. For the majority of my professional life I worked primarily in the private sector; consequently, I have very minimal professional experience in the public sector. While rummaging through various documents, searching for material required for the completion of this analysis, I recognized that there are overlapping and recurring themes which clearly point to who I am as a professional and, thus, the direction in which my professional life should proceed, public service. Therefore, my professional mission statement is, “To vigorously perform my responsibilities as a public administrator and to enhance the quality of public service by providing my clients with dedication, honesty and a commitment to make the best interest of all, my first priority.”…

This course began by questioning the proper role and place of public administration as a field of study. As we conclude with our final week, the topic arises once again. Donald Kettl in "Public Administration at the Millennium: The State of the Field, Laurence Lynn Jr. in "The Myth of the Bureaucratic Paradigm: What Traditional Public Administration Really Stood For," and Frederickson et al in The Public Administration Theory Primer evaluate the field of public administration, by answering three questions. They provide answers to where has the field been, where is it now, and where is it going.…
