In chapter one, the author Martha Menchaca discusses the racial foundations and history of Mexican-American Indians, Whites, and Blacks. Menchaca begins her chapter discussing how archeologists and anthropologists in the past before the 1960s had little interest in recovering Mexican-American prehistory. It was not until the 1970s Mexican-American anthropologists began to recover their culture’s prehistory. Menchaca also shares that Mexican-American indigenous past is both in Mexico and the Southwest and have roots tracing back to Aztlán. She argues that Aztlán may not have been the true site of the origins of many Indians.…
Now, Sara Miles book “Take This Bread” had many differences and similarities. Sara Miles grew up as an atheist, which is an interesting key point to her journey to becoming a Christian (Miles xiii). Religion was very point blank in her book. Her parents were obviously atheist, her grandparents were very religious, but what about her? How did she become the avid Christian she is today?…
In Jill Lepore’s, Harvard alumni and staff writer for the New Yorker, depicts in her book The White of Their Eyes observations and expert opinions of American History and the changes and misinterpretations of groups in today’s time who compare their cause to that of previous political groups around the time of the Constitution and its construction by the founding fathers. Jill Lepore sees America as a “battle” of ideas being fought in front of public eyes, Lepore avidly gives her opinions on this pressing issue throughout the writing by comparing and contrasting the time periods while giving historical evidence to support here claims; and not just observing actions and statements given by political officials from the sidelines like most major…
Mixed is an inside look at a mixed-race woman’s self-discovery. The author was born to an African-American mother and a white father in Philadelphia, on December 5, 1978. She spent her life in Pennsylvania until moving to Los Angeles, California. Although Angela Nissel became a successful writer with her witty sense of humor, it took years to accept her true heritages and to find her place on Earth.…
In conclusion, this specific review over The Time Travelers Wife written by Joshua Starnes is an extremely poorly written review. The fact that Starnes was able to go into good detail about the overall summary of the movie was one thing that did, in fact, add to the value of the review. On the other hand, because he did not write at an adequate enough length to discuss the movie well enough, failed to discuss any of the actors and their acting quality except for one, and because he just did not add in many details about any of the movie-making aspects, this is an overall very poor…
This section of text from Marya Hornbacher’s 1998 memoir, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, is a first-hand account of her experiences with eating disorders throughout her life. This depiction of her on-going battle with anorexia and bulimia for over fourteen years establishes her familiarity with the topic while appealing to the emotions of the audience as they experience the perspective of a person who has struggled with negative body image, eating disorders, and insecurity. Furthermore, by detailing some of her own experiences—many of which from when she was a child—without establishing a definitive opinion on the implications of negative body image, Hornbacher allows the reader to arrive to their own conclusions about the real-life dangers of the over-glamourized standard for the “perfect” body and the addictiveness of the quest for thinness. Hornbacher’s memoir was originally published nearly two decades ago, illustrating her experiences with eating disorders through the age of twenty-three; however, the content of her book is just as…
As my peers reviews would say I would talk about the reading…
Inspirational, uplifting, and informational are three words I choose to describe the memoir: Becoming Ms. Burton wrote by Cari Lynn and Susan Burton. It’s not every day you get the chance to read a book that is able to enhance your own perspective on life, but Ms. Burton’s book did just that. The story, Ms. Burton’s story, give reader’s a major glimpse into the life of a woman suffering from her unearned disadvantages and the consequences that are tied to those disadvantages. The beginning of the story starts with Susan, Ms. Burton’s former self, and takes the reader’s on a journey through Susan’s life full of hardships from growing up in a crime-ridden neighborhood, to her introduction to crack cocaine. As the book moves forward, Susan’s story evolves into a bigger story that is connected to multiple social problems such as poverty, abuse, and racial discrimination in the justice system.…
Today, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. It can be assumed that the reason for suicide would be depression or a mental illness, although it will never be clearly understood when the victim takes the answers with him. However, the individuals who attempt suicide and survive say that dying is a better option then suffering through the pain of living. The novel, The Ordinary People, by Judith Guest is a story that explains the healing process of a teenage boy after a suicide attempt in result of a guilty conscience. The author utilizes the elements of theme, character relationships, and symbols to convey her message.…

Christine Tinsley: Being a Teacher Outside of the Classroom When I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would always say that I wanted to be a teacher. My teachers and family made a significant impact on my life and my decision to be a teacher. I would not have become the person I am today without them.…
In both of my concert reviews, I had major differences. For one, my grade nine paper wasn’t even finished. My grade 10 paper had everything completed and it was in the correct format. In my grade nine review, it contained many spelling errors like using the word song instead of composition. The grade nine one wasn’t double-spaced and was very sloppy.…
