Notably, Hannah has changed throughout the story and became appreciative of what she has. Hannah was transported from her current, modern life to a life in the past. She learned how things were done and understood her ancestors experiences and why she should change her ways. She also remembered when she was little she drew a long string of numbers on her arm to match her Grandpa's and Aunt Eva's but when she showed her grandpa he became enraged and she didn't understand why. Hannah was also very selfish when she had to eat the herbs she complained about their taste. On the other hand, when she was starving in the camps she was longing for any type of food, even the bitter herbs. The book says,"'Without food there is no life'...She dreamed of roast beef, sweet wine, and bitter herbs."(Yolen 102 and 104) The quote states that the prisoners are getting quite hungry. Hannah even dreamed of the herbs that she was complaining about in her modern life. She realized how important it was that she actually had food and now that she hasn't eaten in a few days she should re-think her complaining.
