No one understands how much this affects Hannah, and when she tries to reach out to people about what she is feeling they think it’s for attention. Hannah decides to go to the guidance counselor and when even he doesn’t listen to her, Hannah doesn't know what else to do than to take her own life. Before she does, she leaves 7 cassette tapes with 13 different people and 13 reasons why she took her own life. Theses tapes get passed around to the people on them and they all get to hear what they did and what others did to cause Hannah’s suicide.

Suicide is the act of causing one's own death. According to dosomething.com, “Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds and 2nd for 24 to 35-year-olds”. Through the use of Lydia's death and the Lee family's reaction, The book Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng shows both the reasons for a young person's suicide and how the act affects the people closest to them. Additionally, throughout the book, the youngest daughter Hannah is a background character who is shown to be nearly invisible and forgotten to the rest of the family. 13 Reasons Why a novel by Jay Asher contains many effective literary devices. However, the most compelling technique that Asher uses is his ability to provide effective dialogue that reaches out to readers directly. In my opinion the most powerful quote that Asher writes is during cassette number three after Hannah explains how traumatizing it was to be targeted by Marcus, the school body president and most unsuspecting character. Asher has the main Character Clay react to these events with this heart wrenching quote, “I’m listening to someone give up. Someone I knew.…
