Kit was teaching children how to read at the school, and she decided to have them act out a part of the Bible; it got out of hand and then Mr. Eliezer Kimberly, the head of the school enters the house and disbands the school. Kit was so upset seeing Mercy cry, that she ran to the meadow and fell down and cried, she then felt a presence and looked up only to find an old woman standing there looking at her; the woman was Hannah Tupper, the woman that everyone thought was a witch. Hannah invited Kit over to eat something.
As they eat Hannah tells kit that she and her husband walked from Dorchester, Massachusetts and how in town there was not any land for them since they had a brand on their foreheads. Kit then starts telling Hannah about where she came from and how she hates it here and doesn’t think she belongs. Hannah brings Kit outside and shows her a flower that is similar to the ones she has where she is from and Hannah tells her it is all the way from Africa and how she was

Kit tells Judith that she does not think John is ready, but Judith replies saying that she should be more worried about William. Kit goes and visits Hannah and on the way back runs into John, they start talking and Kit realizes that he loves Mercy. Kit wants John to tell Mercy that he loves her. John goes to her house with her and says that he would like to talk to her father. Judith misunderstands thinking that John is asking her father for her hand in marriage; she drags her dad in and tells the whole room that her and John are going to get married. Instead of correcting Judith, John agrees to the engagement. They walk to the Husking bee and William asks about marriage to Kit, but Kit asks for more time and he agrees, but when the Dolphin comes Nat says that there are sixteen diamond-paned windows for William and his
